I can't do it. My clients aren't really mine, so I may be in a different situation than you, but I wouldn't put with that shit from the CEO of Bank of America. I'm not saying I'd be yelling and screaming about it, but I won't tolerate people thinking I'm someone it's okay to spout that shit to.

2.

Screw whether the clients are yours or not. Life's too short to have to put up with bigots.

I have had very few conversations like this, but for some reason most of my clients tend to be very liberal and pc. On the occasions when people have made such comments, I've usually been related to them and they've usually taken significant grief for the comment.

The one in particular is my bread and butter - long term client and nothing is going to change his views. I think he does it partly to antagonize me, since I have made a very clear point at board meetings of telling this (business entity) client that they cannot discriminate, etc.

And by bread and butter, I mean Mortgage Payment, so sometimes you do have to put up with it, especially if they are a very good client otherwise.

Usually for me bad hangover and memories are mutually exclusive. It's a toss up on which I'd rather have.

*Well, that and they escorted me out.
I'm really surprised they hired you in the first place - seeing how those kinds of guys usually have a "boys club" type of mentality.

My previous job was with a financial giant, and shall remain nameless, (however, think Martha Stewart). Shortly after 9-11, all the Catholics in the office went to a special prayer at some big cathedral here in the city and took the whole afternoon off. 2 of us left in the office to "hold the fort down." We got a little offended and we plotted to just leave the fucking place with the door open.

Anti-semitism still seems acceptable to some people, and I just don't get it. People make comments that they wouldn't make anymore about racial minorities, and people even seem to hide their anti-homosexual prejudices.

Anyway, I have heard comments like this recently, and I think they're more common in other parts of the country than they are in New York. I have heard people use "Jew" as a derogatory verb, and I've certainly heard derisive references to the practices of Jews. That sucks, but it still goes on. I always wonder if those kinds of prejudices will still be around in 100 years, or if we will all just have fucked each other beige (and culturally beige, too) by then.

I never hear that shit from clients, though. Maybe it's the kind of stuff that I do, or the kind of clients I have, but I'm amazed that there are people out there being that obvious about their prejudices in a business context.

ETA - thank you all for the bed suggestions. I feel a little less clueless now.
Maybe it's different where they have retail stores (NY/NJ only, I thought), but the real thing I have against West Elm in the patch is that it's all Ikea-style. They ship you the stuff in a box, and you put it together. I am past the point in my life where I want to put together furniture with those metal locking head screws that you insert other screws into. It is pretty cheap, though.

I think it is part of Pottery Barn or Crate and Barrel or something like that, so you may find very similar stuff at those stores.

What surprises me is the need to point out someone's race - i.e. "he's black and he's really smart". As if one has anything to do with the other - no one would say "he's white and he's really smart", even if they were just being descriptive. I have heard that kind of thing more than once.

hmm. that makes me not want to buy from there. thanks. although I like putting things together, putting furniture together with screws makes me think I am still in school.
