I'm curious. When people say offensive things in your presence, do you have any reaction? Or when it comes to indicating whether you think their views are legitimate, have you concluded that it's "a tough call to make, but that she should do whatever she thought was right."

I've never understood it either. I have a (Baptist) friend who married a half-Jewish guy (practicing Baptist). Admitedly he's a bit of a tool, but not because of any religion. Her mother hasn't spoken to her since the wedding. Mom's an equal opportunity hater, though: Her brother married a Baptist Korean girl. The mom hasn't spoken to him either.

I can't imagine having that much hate in my life.

I think it is somewhat regional. Here we get a lot of anti-Mexican comments. And most people making these comments refer to anyone of Hispanic descent as Mexican (offensive enough by itself).

I don't think Ava'll necessarily be on the hook for Adrian's death. There were no signs of a struggle, and I noticed she was very careful not to touch the handle of the knife. They can't pin down the time of death so exactly that it will be obvious that she was there when she died. For all they know, she had already left for the airport.

There's probably something to that. I very rarely get negative comments about minority groups of any sort, but when I do they are usually about our African-American cousins down the road. Very little Jew, Asian or Gay/Lesbian bashing, at least none I can remember.

Some groups also are higher profile than others. And may have "leaders" who love to stir the pot -- the recent actions of the D-town City Comedy, er, Council (seeking to develop black-business-only African Town area, vote to establish sizable fund to loan money exclusively to African-American business) threw just a little fuel on the fire. The racists are having a field day with that one.

One additional theory -- where someone stands career-wise may have something to do with whether someone will say these kinds of things -- people who need to hold a job or are working up the latter (say, GAs, for example), tend to keep their mouths shut, while the self-employed and the top management types maybe be a little more ready to share their views.

When i was at my last firm, young jewish guy is asked to work for new litigation client from like where not bob lives. the new client says "Well i'm glad to have me a Jew lawyer on board." i guess he meant it well, but my friend felt it was as bad as the reverse.

The worst i heard was in a red neck bar, some really drunk mullet headed guy spouting canned sterotypes about Jewish women. My wife and daughter are Jewish women. I was about to say something when something in his eyes told me he was full of shit and had probably never even knew one.

I guess I think if you move on economically you win and the best thing is to just think fuck 'em to the ignorant, try and make them recognize they're shit for brain but don't worry about not teaching them. I gotthis from hearing anti-itie crap alot growing up.

Anyway, it depends whether or not the speaker is someone I can really tell to fuck off or face-throw the contents of a drink or something like that. I often find that kind of response, if not useful or productive, enjoyable.

When that's not an option (girlfriend's parents, situation where causing a scene is wholly inappropriate), I am more likely to make a remark or simply tell someone that their views are prejudiced and offensive to me.

The only times I haven't said anything were when I just wasn't sure if the intent was offensive or if it would be worth it to get into an argument with someone. One time I was with someone in a group and, as we talked about a (not present) colleague's ex-girlfriend, he said "Isn't she a Jew?" Someone else said, "Yes, so what if she is?", and he said that he wass just curious about their relationship and the reasons it ended, since the guy is Catholic. In that situation, I chose not to say anything because I wasn't sure he had ill will. Either way, the guy was an ass who said inappropriate shit.

Finally, the saddest thing to me is hearing minority groups speak poorly of other minority groups. I won't get into examples, but hearing one often discriminated-against group try to rationalize and justify their prejudice towards another group is just pathetic. My comment in those situations is always, "Wow, you're lucky that you've never experienced racial or cultural prejudice!" When the person responds that he or she has, it usually doesn't even take an additional comment for that person to get it.

Why is this anon? If this board wants to encourage people to admit crap like they put sugar on their dick to get a dog to lick it when they were 12, or explain that they have BM's on cue, there needs to be a much higher bar for anon.
