All get way too much credit for being "good schools" if you ask me. I mean, sure, Duke is maybe the best school in North Carolina, but it is still just North Carolina.
I'm not sure I follow you, but if your point w/r/t Duke and georgetown is that they get too much credit for being good schools with good basketball programs (because those things are somehow uncompatible or something I guess?), please let me be the first to point out to you that Georgetown's basketball program sucks Thurgreed's dick. And, with the demise of the Big East as we know it, it will never be good again.

Well, mostly I'm just giving Gatti shit. And for various reasons I've never really liked Stanford or Georgetown. But I do actually think that Georgetown is genuinely overrated as a school. (And that American is underrated. I went to neither but have had a lot of contact with people at both places.) Just my opinion.

I suppose it depends on the school. Michigan seems kind of overrated.

OTOH, if the robot monkey really is wielding a death ray, I'm not arguing with him.

I disagree. I liked the 2004 Red Sox as a team. I can't stand Red Sox fans. Yankees fans actually aren't that bad...but the Yankees essence angers me.

Nevertheless, complete indifference pisses people off more than hate.

Could you throw Notre Dame fans on that list? I have a co-worker who is both a Notre Dame fan and a Minnesota Vikings fan. I don't go anywhere near him when either of those teams is playing. I'd hate to have to kill him. I mean, other than those unfortunate allegiances, he seems like a nice enough guy.

No offense, but the main reason people might think you have some good opinions is because RT likes you- but that doesn't point to being well-educated or knowing about colleges. Her last boyfriend was a cement worker, as an example.

Georgetown had some good teams and ran a good program (when they could use TV to recruit). And Iverson back then was the quickest human being I've ever seen live. Bar none.

Hell, I don't understand why anyone would dislike Georgetown. Underachievers. They should have (arguably) won two more championships than they did.*

TM

*Although, looking back, I never understand why people think Georgetown should have been favored against UNC in '82. Think of the players on those two teams.

I see the sentences on the page and yet they make no sense to me. Damn my crap-ass Jesuit education! Father Drinan, why have you foresaken me?!?

Best college game I ever watched (live) -- Iverson/G'Town vs. Allen/CT. They both had command of their teams and the court. Was like a one-on-one matchup. Iverson was better in college in terms of controlling the tempo and style of the game, I thought, but I might be biased.

Second best college match-up I've ever seen (live) -- Van Horn/Utes and Duncan/Wake.

And yes, Duke can suck it.

To be fair, it was very shortly before my 14th B-Day. My love for college B-ball and my loathing of Bobby Knight are in my blood. I was born and U of Michigan a couple of hours before they lost the championship to Indiana. The Dr. and my parents were all grateful for my timing as they could throw me in the corner and watch the game.

The fact that I Saw the Sign was my theme song didn't tip you off?

Is it that they need to drop the junior college players they perennially rely upon (UNLV basketball-like) and get back to providing an education to their students?

Because I think SMU and Baylor really need to do that.

I also hate Duke. One guy in our office is a horrible frontrunner fan. Watched the Duke-UCONN championship game with him and some other guys here -- everyone but him rooted against Duke. Naturally he was obnoxious the whole game as Duke led almost the whole way. Couldn't hear a peep out of him after UCONN went on to win, however.

People hate Duke because Redick, other players, K and their fans come off as arrogant tools. Also the constant fellating of Duke by ACCSPN adds to the problem. I was so pissed when Dockery hit that shot last night.

Pretty good prank pic some Maryland fans did on some Dukies:

Perhaps your crap non-Jesuit education is letting you down?

I keep calling USC SMU because but-for the SMU death penalty they are the same school and I've spent more of my life living in the vicinity of SMU.

Ps. This tends to piss off USC fans.

My father was a cement worker. I was a cement worker. What's wrong with cement workers? It toughens you up to deal with all those East Coast prep school wankers in an appropriate fashion.

Plus it makes you relish each and every day the joy of knowing your life's ambition has been fulfilled... to have a big soft butt and an air conditioned office.

I've been a Duke fan since 1985-86, the team with Johnny Dawkins, Tommy Amaker, Mark Henderson, Mark Alarie, Jay Bilas, and Billy King that went to the Final Four and lost to Louisville. I wanted to go to Duke, but they didn't let me in, and I had to go somewhere else. Over the years, it's been harder and harder to root for them -- and I've been happier and happier not to be an alum -- because of their fans. But Coach K is a classy, classy act. I had the chance to interview him once, in a situation where it would have been very easy to blow me off, and he was just incredibly decent. When you think about the Bob Hugginses of the world, it makes it much easier to root for him and for Duke.

Coach K. is the hard part- for me the hypo
  • "Your son is being recruited for division I b-ball- Coach K has offered him a scholarship and so has Tom Izzo (or whoever is your favorite team)- your son wants your advice"

has an answer i'd rather not admit to myself.

edit- this is not to imply that this is a likely occurence. But as a lawyer I must anticipate the possible hard choices that might present themselves, however remote the liklihood.

Ahem. It is traditional for newbers to make an inaugural post about wildlife they are presently observing from the windows of their respective home offices. No one can remember exactly why; I believe it has something to do with oblations to the Great Old Ones who lie in the submerged city of R'lyeh somewhere in the Southeast Pacific Ocean, dead but dreaming. I can't believe he made too much noise about the Vikes in the early part of the season. They seem to have settled down and figured out how to win after the Sex Boat Scandal but the early season was painful.

Dude, the thing making me barf right now is Penn State getting dicked into a bowl against Bobby Bowden's worst team in years. Sure, seeing Paterno assfuck Bowden in a clash of the the two winnigest coaches in history makes it kind of cool, but I don't think the bowl is fair to Bowden or Paterno. Bowden should play Penn State when he's got a better team, and Paterno deserves to play a better team. Oregon deserves Penn State. A Notre Dame/PSU or PSU/Ohio State bowl would also be great (but they'd never waste two huge draws in one bowl like that). The system fucks PSU, OSU and ND because they are the top draws in the nation.

All that said, FSU is not as bad as their record, and even at their worst, they could beat almost any top ten team. I expect them to give PSU a few scares.

ETA: I guess I should look at the bright side... a PSU/VT bowl would be a boring bloodbath.

ABBA's New Car

Seeing as how it is FUCKING FREEZING where I live, my car wouldn't start this morning so I could not get to the gym (I take public transportation to work because I am a terror on wheels and probably would get lost either to or from work, which is 3.2 miles from my house - yes, I am aware that I have a problem and I don't give a shit). My gym is 1.22 miles away and I really only drive to and from it when it is FUCKING FREEZING outside and to and from the grocery store. I take cabs when I go out. I very VERY VERY VERY rarely drive. My question: if my aluminum foil car is dead, what should I buy to replace it? I don't care about anything other than that the car "goes" and that it is as small as possible so I can park the stupid fucking thing. Alternatively I could just move into the gym since I can take public transportation from the gym to work also - just not from home to the gym at 5:00 am, which is when I need to go.

Am I the only one who thinks it's weird to see a relatively lengthy and engaged discussion of college football from you?
