I read an article on what RT posted yesterday, and the comments were absolutely appalling. I'm not going back there to link to it, but it made me feel sick.

Oedipulist fuck.

Your gym sounds like a nice place. People of all sexes and colors just kicking and beating the shit out of each other. That's what America is all about.

As a matter of fact, it reminds me of my family. Without grandma's racial slurs.

Unless I've missed some changes in the law, private clubs are allowed to discriminate -- even on reprehensible grounds. (Although there are still ways to attack them for it.) This is sure as heck not the only swim club/country club in the Philly Suburbs with a no minorities policy.

Best hope is that the publicity might embarrass enough of the members and management to force some slow changes.

I like you.

Yes, indeed.

actually, my point was the story is different from yesterday. I think today there were fewer things alleged like you now allege. I also think openly ignorant racists, like the ones doing obama election mock ups that we've seen here, are far less dangerous than educated racists who hide their beliefs. I do believe that educated racists hide their beliefs for the most part, and if the guy made the word choice intending to refer to black people, he had to know it would hit papers- I mean he was talkign to a reporter, right?

Thus, when a guy who runs a private club in northeast Philly says "complexion" I believe there is a chance he made a really bad word choice, BECAUSE, and hold on tight, a really racist educated guy making the decision to exclude people based on race who be really careful to not make such a loaded word choice.

that said, is it possible that the decision was driven by members who were freaked out that the club had let in a bunch of black kids? yes, sure.

and, in fact, the way I can best see "complexion" meaning race is the guy who said it was ordered to kick the kids out because a few members freaked, and was making the word choice intentionally to signal what his superior had ordered him to do, and against his wishes. again, a guy who is so backward as to choose the word the way you seem to accept would not have signed the camp up in the first place.

but, rather than attempt to bring any nuance here, let me retract all of my prior post, and substitute this: racism is bad.

See. Unnecessary.

A fucking cocksucking prick is entirely different from a fucking dickbag.

Don't be so wounded. It seems pretty clear that this club's management (whether they were acting on their members' wishes or not) didn't want a bunch of black kids swimming in their pool. Whether or not the statement regarding the club's complexion was overtly racist or not is completely besides the point. The actions are what is so egregious. The statement, whether mistakenly made to sound racist or not, is just icing on the cake. The fact that you're going so out of your way to try to find alternate reasons why they would throw out a bunch of black kids they knew were coming just seems silly.

I think Hank is just parsing through who is guilty here, and pointing out that it may be that management may not be a bunch of racist fuckwads but instead the tools of racist fuckwads. And that the members who are the real racists probably don't think of themselves as such.

Poor Hank. I get the feeling he's been a tool for bad behavior himself.

I agree, i was just challenging the emphasis on the statement- and as to the exception that a private club can be as excluding as it wants, I'm not sure (and we'll have to allow atticus a few hours to read up and become an expert to get the final answer), but when a private club enters a contract, then breaches for discriminator reasons, well maybe you are getting closer to something actionable.

65 kids sounded like a lot of kids when I was thinking of a pool like the one at my YMCA. But this swim club sounds like its a whole lot bigger:

The club includes more than 10 acres of land and a 110,000-gallon pool,
And if the number was an issue, they could have made a contract limiting the number of kids they could bring on any one day.

I have no concept of how big an 110,000 gallon pool is.

I love what i do too, but I am often a tool for the ill-intentioned.

still, just last month I took down a very evil international company that had a plan in place to extrot money that Don Corleone would have admired, so that helps a little (pm if interested for details)

This one supposedly holds 50,000 and ranges from 3 - 9 feet deep.

http://www.kentuckylakeresort.com/pool.jpg

But that is neither here nor there because if you contract for a certain number of kids to be able to use the pool and you know your capacity, the number of kids who then show up can't really be the excuse.

That would only be about 18,000 beers per kid. That may be why they didn't want them there.

No, he's mixed race, relatively light-skinned (and powerful), so they'd let him in on a Visitror's Pass to show how tolerant and openminded they really are. This isn't Augusta National after all.

The Appalachian Trail is where you go to find your soulmate. I think Adder is looking for something a little more casual. Somewhere between soulmate and airport restroom hookup. That's just the vibe I get, though.
