Border towns are too dangerous to go to from south Texas these days. I'm headed to the Valley next month. We used to go across all the time. Now it's highly discouraged.

I've only been to TJ once in college for about three hours, and we went to some fairly awful places. But we were dumb college kids looking to drink and dance. It certainly wasn't an experience I'd want to repeat, but I don't really want to repeat 19 either.

Recently, I went to Mexico for a friend's birthday party, and I cannot recommend Sayulita highly enough. It's a sleepy surf town about 45 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta, and it's lovely. We were there over Halloween weekend, and we got to participate in some of the Day of the Dead festivities. The town doesn't feel at all like a resort town. There's maybe two or three hotels, but most of the accommodation is through rentals of houses. We'd walk all over the place at all hours and never felt unsafe in the slightest. Since Southwest now flies to Mexico, I can see it being a fairly regular jaunt for me going forward. I really loved it.

My one trip to Iowa was like this, back in my Jesse Jackson days. We drove out from Chicago, stopped at the John Deere Museum and Ronald Reagan's boyhood home, and had dinner in Iowa with some fun locals looking back out across the Mississippi at Illinois and watching purple martins flocking over the river feeding on swarms of bugs.

But we saw a fine part of Iowa, had a perfectly fine meal, and enjoyed some good company.

You made a wise decision, especially if you approached Iowa from the north. I learned on a single swing for the Gore campaign that there are more pleasant parts of Iowa (like where you were), but the western half of the state not so much.

But that would suggest that Kanye's unpredictability is the reason, not the fact that he's a scary black rap artist who said mean things about racism to President GW Bush after Katrina.

I used to know an awful lot about the application of the Equal Protection Clause to non-citizens, but I haven't used those muscles in many years. Speaking at a high level, there is doctrine that constitutional rights don't apply, or don't apply in nearly the same way, at the border, and thus that law enforcement gets to do all sorts of things in deciding who comes into the country that it would not otherwise.
