I heartily recommend all the Thin Man movies.

If I could be any fictional character, it would be Nora Charles.

She does have an odd loping walk, but this brings up one of my filmmaking pet peeves:

Everyone looks unnatural when shown in full body walking toward the camera. I do not know why this is, but it is true.

When directors are shooting actors like Julia Roberts who are known for their legs, they shoot them walking in full body, and it always looks unnatural. Shot from the side or 3/4, they look as though they are moving normally.

Anyone seen the Eye? I'm dying to see that.
The previews of the Hulk seemed way too animated. This is not the case?

I also liked the Italian Job, but then I have a thing for both Marky Mark and Jason Statham, so i was pretty happy throughout. My understanding is that Edward Norton made it very clear that he was only doing the movie because of contractual obligations. I don't understand why. It looked like it was a fun movie to be in.

I've had no patience for Julia since her Oscar acceptance gushing, as followed up the next year with her trying to steal the limelight from Denzel. I think she used to be kind of cute in all her formula movies (in particular, Notting Hill was a good movie), but my love for her is gone...

Charlize is gorgeous. I don't see any puffy-cheek thing with her. And I will again say that I seriously doubt that every actress with puffy cheeks has some sort of eating disorder.

Whatever you said about Singles I say about Neil LaBute. And I am not superfamiliar with Mamet but SPanish Prisoner was great. Hey, it had Stever Martin in it. The man's appearance in any film makes it worth watching.

Ahhh I remember those wonderful days when it was guaranteed that if Charlize was in a movie, she would at some time take her clothes off.

Sitting through Bagger Vance with that expectation and realizing that the trend had ended made me hate Will Smith even more. If ANY movie needed nudity, it was Bagger Vance...

OK, this inspired me to try to figure out exactly in which movies I have not been annoyed by JR. They include:

Pretty Woman (though Gere was REALLY annoying)
The Mexican
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (but it was a near thing)

That's it.

You beat me to the punch. You must be my soulmate or something. I have a nice collection of Thin Man films and throw one in when I need a pick-me-up. I have introduced many a person to these wonderful films and have not had a bad reaction yet -- even from staunch "I hate black and white films" people. Myrna Loy is absoloutely beautiful and wonderfully funny. William Powell is oddly handsome.

"Reality" Gets Real

Now, THAT'S Reality!

DUBLIN (Reuters) - An Irish reality television show nearly sank without trace Friday after the ship carrying contestants around the country's treacherous coastline hit the rocks and broke up.

Terrified contestants taking part in state broadcaster RTE's "Cabin Fever" program were winched to safety by helicopter after the boat they were supposed to stay aboard for eight weeks ran aground near Tory Island, Donegal, in northwest Ireland.

A producer with the company making the program -- flagged as the Irish television event of the summer -- said all precautions had been taken, the ship thoroughly checked before setting out and the crew trained in sea survival.

Reality Show Bachelor Interview

The lawyer who is the bachelor on the show where women compete for him but can ditch him for $1 mil instead was on the Today show this morning. He is sorry about his poor judgment in groping the woman at the JAG program, and is also sorry for his poor judgment/for how it looked when he asked a bachelorette removing his boots for him to turn around while doing so so he could openly check out her ass.

He's reformed now, I know it. He is my dreamboat. Like a million bucks could replace that guy?

Funny. I'll probably get shit for this, and I know that the guy is an ass, but I kind of felt for the guy when his law firm (affiliation, whatever) dumped him within a day of his JAG dirty laundry being aired and his boot removal/hot tub debacle show. Bet he had a bad week last week! Here the guy thought he was Bachelor cool and now he is coming across as the biggest heel since Darva Conger's ex. Just goes to show that reality tv has the ability to bite people in the ass. And if you have a big secret, like having been dishonorably removed from the JAG corps, don't do a reality show.

Fame. Ain't it a bitch.

He struck me on the first Today interview (the day the show began) as really not being into the whole thing. Like he realized after filming that he really screwed his future, and now that he's doing the obligatory interviews, he's going to try to sound as unexcited as possible about the whole thing.

Maybe he needs to talk to Ed Norton about how to go through the motions when under contractual obligation.

Half-hearted book recs.

I originally posted the same thing as everyone else did about Ed Norton, but then I caught up and felt like an idiot. So now I'm here with a blank canvas. So I think I'll post this:

I had a few flights this weekend (American Airlines' taking over TWA routes is not working out very well), and purchased and read John Fienstein's "The Majors." Exact same style as "Good Walk Spoiled," I can't really give it my endorsement. Perhaps its that 1998's majors just weren't that exciting (Mark O'Meara? Lee Janzen? C'mon . . . .)

Still think that Roger Dodger was an utterly miserable movie--real or not. Opening scene was great, but it was all downhill from there.

Yes. I for one was pondering the cruel fact that even for women as beautiful as Ashley and Charlize, the choice comes down to making either one's calves or one's ankles look better in a photo, because obviously one cannot do both.

Thank god that sucking in one's tummy does not cause one's ass to puff out -- that could drive a person (not me, of course) to despair.

However, Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, and Frankie Sinister did a musical remake (called "High Society") that I absolutely hated. Bing was too old for Grace, Grace did a bad Hepburn impersonation, and Frank didn't sing enough (although he and Bing did have a duet that was wonderful -- can't remember the title, but it was something like "have you heard" or "what a swell party this is"). And Louie Armstrong and his band play some good tunes, too.
"High Society" will go down in history as a great crime perpetrated against Cole Porter. Porter didn't translate well to movies, but there's no excuse for "High Society," given the talent that was available at the time.

The song you're thinking of was "Well, Did You Evah," and it was indeed one of the only bright spots.

Competing for "low spot" would be the completely flat "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" number, Bing trading fours with Louis Armstrong on a tune that purported to be about jazz but seemed not to have been influenced by the art form of the same name, and a rather maudlin Bing rendition of "True Love." Oh, and the long stretches of acting between the musical numbers.

I've just recalled that the Bing/Armstrong number was entitled "Now You Has Jazz," which pretty much sums up everything that's wrong with Bing singing with Armstrong.

Rick Rockwell.

For those of you who grew up in San Diego in the mid 1980s, you may remember a comedy program on Channel 8 called "San Diego at Large"

One of Larry Himmell's skits was Biff and Skippy. Mr. Rockwell was Skippy.

If you've never seen the show, or aren't from southern california, you won't understand it, at all.
