I don't want any of our Muslim friends to miss out on the next K race or Patentpara pile-on just because they happen to be praying.
Are you going to be serving communion?

eta: I'll do anything to get Ty some wine that doesnt come out of a box......I care like that.

Dude didn't ask them to stop the games; if the Muslims here want to use the South/Southwest board a few times a day, I'm generally not bothered.

That said, I generally take the Cletus approach on this one. Slippery slope and all that.

How do you feel about Hillary's disclosures on oBama? Or do you think Gore did it too?

1) given the media outlets involved, I don't think it makes a lot of sense; but

2) nothing would surprise me from any of these yahoos, on either side of the aisle.

eta I've got a bottle of '02 Tori Mor Hawk's View Vineyard Pinot burning a hole in my "cellar." I've meant to keep it until '09 or so, but temptation's a bitch. Drink or hold?

It's 5:11 now. Even with rush hour traffic you could be here by 9:30. That could be the first bottle and then I have......a 1999 Andrew Will Ciel du Cheval, it was slated for Open that Bottle Night in February, but I will uncork it (take note Ty) now.......

You know who REALLY likes wine? The French.

I'm just sayin' you may not want to share your light-loafered, wine-geekness with your Red State friends. They might get the right idea, Pierre.

Yes, but . . . it seems to me that setting up a "prayer room" in the basketball arena is not a particularly good idea. Not because the folks asking for it are douchebags, terrorists, zionists, crusaders or scientologists. Because setting up "sacred" space in an otherwise a-religious facility that no one is present at other than completely voluntarily (i.e. not a workplace) is just not the way America works.

So a few people have to choose between honoring their religious beliefs and attending a basketball game--where does that stop? Do all college football games need to be moved from Saturday afternoons? What about Friday night high school football?
FWIW, Hakeem Olajuwon followed Ramadan in the later years* when he was playing with the Rockets. Every year, the press would do a story on it, and every game during that month, there'd be a sentence about the fast just to point out that Hakeem was truly bad ass due to the fasting before having a triple double or whatever. It didn't seem to get in the way of his being able to play basketball for a month. I don't ever remember seeing him stop to pray. ETA: Of course, he had access to the locker room at half time. Maybe he prayed then. According to Wiki, he now spends part of his time here, and most of his time in Jordan studying Islam.

That said, there are a shitload of blue laws still on the books to satisfy Christian traditions and observances. Hell, until only two years ago you couldn't buy beer before kickoff in Texas on Sunday, cuz somehow or another God doesn't want you to drink during church time. Still can't buy booze on Sundays at a store before noon.

ETA2: As for slippery slope, I can only hope that this idea died with him.

*He was always Muslim, but he really found Allah a few years into his tenure with the team. Before that, he did the basketball playboy scene, had a lot of problems with talking back to refs and stuff, partied a lot. Whenever it was that he changed his name from Akeem to Hakeem was the time that he found Allah. In later years, he helped buy and develop several mosques in Houston. I always thought he was a good ambassador of Islam.

Is that why he added the "H"?

I thought it was a Phi Slamma Jamma thing.

Supposedly the "Hakeem" is a better expression of the Arab word than "Akeem." Either that or Hclyde's hazing ritual went a little too well.

"I hate the French! Notwithstanding that, I like almost everything about France, well, except the smelly French.

Certainly, undisputedly, they have the best wine, food, and their women speak English in a sexy manner and are possessed of certain waif-like charms;)

I like to French kiss and in fairness they did invent the bikini. And the monokini! OH and a Gaulois cigarette is better than anything the Marlboro Man is schmoking.

Yet, I still find that I hate the French. They smell and are cowardly ingrates.

I think that, perhaps, before we go to war in Iraq we should rethink our strategy. We should first ensure continued access to the vineyards of France and after we secure the vineyards, we should let the Iraqis take the rest of that country in exchange for a promise to stay out of America's way in the Middle East. And we should toss in Alec Baldwin, Barbara Stresisand and Jerry Lewis too!

OH and a brief personal aside, last week I beat a Frenchie foreign exhange student at my local pub's backgammon tournament. He was the only thing standing between me and the prise money. Cheque mate! In the aftermath my 11-year old nephew, who came with me to watch, asked me if Pierre offered me his woman following the defeat. Brought the room down with laughter. Except for old Froggie."

good times....good times,

You know, I have no idea where Christians get off pretending to be vicitims. Look, I think your superstitious is just a as silly as that of the Muslims, Jews, Zorastrians or whatever, but there is no way that you can claim to be persecuted in this country. Your faith is everywhere, and those of us who are not Christian can't escape it (we celebrate your holidays, we mostly comply with your values, and we have to listen to Christians constantly sharing their religious wisedom).

Yet we get all of this whining because the Supreme Court says you can't use tax money to force other people to join in your rituals. Never mind that you can use our publicly funded facilities (schools and other government facilities) for your prayer sessions and other gatherings, as long as they participation in them in truly voluntary.

Your whining is total bullshit, and, frankly, I am seriously sick of it.
