http://www.filmhobbit.com/forum/arch...ic/1910-1.html My dad read Lotr to us when we were kids. We got through the first book and the second book and halfway through the third, and then for some reason we stopped. I can't remember why. So I never really knew what happened to Sauruman, and the movie didn't adequately resolve it. |

s p o i l e r In the book the hobbits return to the Shire to find it overrun by a band evil men (and maybe some orcs? - its been a while), who have essentially enslaved the hobbits, with the complicity of some of the hobbits, including some relatives of Bilbo. The adventuring hobbits, flush with their new found heroism (and weapons), lead a revolt and banish the men. The damage, however, has been done, and the Shire will never quite be the same. The resolution gives the Shire a reason to elevate the adventuring hobbits to leadership roles (because otherwise hobbits just wouldn't care), and resolves the Baggins family conflicts. Note the family conflicts are left out of the movies entirely. I think Sam's marriage is an important resolution to the story, and done well (what, a minute of screen time?). But Frodo could have gotten on that boat a little quicker. |

Then again, she does come across as having that sort of slutty dirty-girl thing going on, so that might be part of the attraction. Quote:

That said, I do like her a lot as an actress. It's her endless photos in Vogue every month that creep me out. |

Speaking of LOTR
Quote:
Any shmuck with a hint of an imagination can torture a piece of art to divine meaning that doesn't exist, but I'd hardly call such idiots - or the waste they spew on paper - "interesting." "Tools" is more appropriate. Guess what? There is no secret meaning behind 99% of everything you read or see. Chaucer, Shakespeare, Faulkner, James, Yeats, Lenny Bruce, Bobcat Golthwait, Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Motley Crue, Alice in Wonderland, the Wizard of Oz and just about every other enteratiner/entertainment through history has been exactly what it purposrts to be - ENTERTAINMENT. Some pathetic people can't live with this simplicity, so they find subplots and ejaculate idiot theories about hidden subplots or political undertones. Those people are idiots. Like David Gilmour once said when asked about hidden messages on Dark Side of the Moon, "Its all just fucking pop music." |
