I think your mistake is in thinking that you get some hand in choosing the nickname. Typically (but not always) those come from other posters' references or are handed out by others based on embarrassing facts that you have posted about the person. Not that GGG's help with chimney sweep (ugh!) is entirely your fault, but LMA is absurd and stupid and you coined that one all on your own.

It all feels forced.

This is where not having an affection interest pays off.

I don't even know where to get it, and I'm willing to wait for them to leave.

Hanna Rosin appears to believe that the ridiculousness results from the gender neutrality with which these laws were written, and that the fix is that they should be interpreted to apply only when the abuser is a man, or perhaps only where the context indicates a coercive relationship.

I'm inclined to believe these "must arrest" laws should be repealed outright. I'm uncomfortable with the idea that the solution to intractable relationship problems with troubling power dynamics is to disempower the victim further by removing any control she has over her victimhood. I don't think it's empowering for women to declare them victims and assume their ability to truthfully report their experience and condition is compromised. It's infantilizing, and it victimizes many women further to haul off the person who is, though an unworthy partner in the eyes of college-educated middle class liberals, still often better than no partner at all. We've substituted our collective judgment that a victim of DV should have all her decisions made for her. Meanwhile, many times what they are doing is collecting every penny of their own monetary resources to go downtown to bail the man out so he shows up to work the next morning and doesn't get fired and cost the family their home. It's a shitty situation made shittier by half-baked notions of people who have a much better idea of what it's like to be a woman but absolutely no idea what it's like to be poor, or worse, a single mother with no childcare options during working hours. It's like the police are asked to pat the woman on the head and tell her she's really better off without him, and won't you please shut up if you disagree? How is that empowering?

Anyway, just needed to vent that this Tiger absurdity is the natural consequence of a social policy that demands to be measured by its good intentions rather than any more useful metric, like whether it actually causes or exacerbates the suffering of real human beings who deserve to have a say in the fate of their families.

I'm not sure I understand the real meaning of all of the phrases in that post, but I think on an imperfect understanding I can sign off on that. :D

Thoughts?

I guess this clears up that you didn't swallow.

Anyone have any clue how to gift someone something on Kindle?

The night you took The Capeman for your name.

WTH? When their father was reading the list to me, I laughed at "a cape" and asked whether it was for his evenings out at the OP-era -- such as La Boheme. He thought maybe he was going for the Monopoly guy look.

Perhaps he is a fan of Paul Simon? Or Marc Anthony?

This is my favorite comment so far on the whole debacle:

1. Men think with their dicks. Woods is married to a Swedish model. Yet the National Enquirer is reporting that he cheats on her, especially with one named woman. (This has caused every sports message board in the world to have a post from someone oh-so-knowingly saying "Show me the hottest woman in the world, and I'll show you someone who's sick of putting up with her shit." This post is usually written by a 320-pound sweatpants-wearing Cheetos-scarfer who hasn't known the touch of a woman since that one party 18 years ago. He still googles the girl's name every month or so.)

You can't. It is a problem with the Kindle. That said, you can give someone an Amazon gift certificate for them to use to buy kindle stuff

That's a little unfair, J. Fred actually married the girl from the party, although having said that, she still withholds the sex.

They said John Houseman was a pompous PITA, unsurprisingly, who made himself known as an Important Person everywhere he went. On the other hand, they didn't recognize George Carlin at first and thought he was a super nice, low-key guy.

I really like the Foot Duvet from Restoration Hardware. Our heat went out last week, and those things were awesome.

In related news, it's supposed to snow here on Friday.
