keyless entry

So maybe I asked this here before, in which case I regret repeating myself.

A few years ago I rented a house in Japan, and it had an awesome keyless entry system. There was no external lock on the front door at all. On the wall next to the door, there was a simple metal plate covering a plain screen. When you lifted the plate, an electronic (image of a) keypad would appear, always in a different place (so that you couldn't look at fingerprints to figure out what the combination was). When you entered the right code, the door would unlock, and you could slide it open. One neat thing about this system is that the rental agency could give us a code that would work for a week, but not thereafter.

I want to install one of these in my house, but I can't find it, on- or off-line. Anyone have any suggestions?

Touché.

Schlage makes such things, including with cell phone control:

For the changing keypad locations, only time I'm seen that is for security entering federal agencies--so people couldn't look over your shoulder. Not sure you really need it for a door, given limited entries and ability to use some windex once in a while.

Time to go see your cousin and file that hos-tel work envi-romint claim he keeps talking about."

We have a deal - I pretend to ignore her online business (she sells Franklin Mint collectables on eBay and crafts on Etsy) and she pretends not to read my email and acts like she doesnt monitor my web activity.

Win-win.

Translation: I am unfamiliar with Bay Area rules for "keeping up with the Jones."

My issue is that this is ugly:

while the one I used in Japan was elegant.

Have you checked for the name of the manufacturer in Hapan? I'm sure it can be imported?

Wish I knew what it was.

Sure, and you drive a Honda instead of a Chevy.

Kaba?

Although I think it installs upside down.

Apropos of this, since Flower is ignoring me, I am leaning towards agreeing with Molly Lambert's take on things from Grantland

I don't get it - why do you even need something like this at the door? I mean, presumably they'd have already gotten by the guys at the gate, the perimeter guards, and the patrol dogs, so I'd think this would be child's play.

You need to be careful there.

Yeah, when I think of fun-loving peoples, I always think Japan.
