 "Match Point" - 8.5/10
The Woodman's triumphant return, except there isn't a reason to think he actually directed it. The Welshman is great, contrary to some reviews. Scarlett is - as usual - hot, hot, hot, until she tries to imitate the late Shelly Winters from "A Place in the Sun" - which isn't improper I guess, since its the basis for her role - and becomes overly-irritating. My favorite flick in some time.

 | I saw Match Point this weekend too - and agree (mostly) with your assessment. Scarlett Johanssen is great until her role turns into a one-note performance (not necessarily her fault). Emily Mortimer reminds me of someone, and I cannot place it -- it's PISSING ME OFF, dammit. I already looked at imdb.com, and it's not from the movies that I'm finding her familiar. It is my favorite movie in some time, but that's not saying much. I don't go out too often, and when I do, it's not usually to the movies.

What surprised me was how little laughter there was at the funny lines (I won't spoil the setup, but the joke ending with the punchline, "It seems like rather an unfair trade" was absolutely hilarious. It was met with (well, but for my rather unladylike guffaw) deadening silence. WTF? I know it's not a comedy, but that doesn't mean you're not allowed to laugh at the funny stuff!). All in all, a very, very enjoyable movie. It was the opinion of one reviewer that the visual near the end (the scene in slow motion) will be an iconic classic for filmdom in general for many years to come. I don't know if that's saying too much, but it was quite something (that scene). |
