I have changed my position on the desireability of general acceptance of soccer by the Great American Public. After watching some of the fratboy meatheads who turned out for the US games, I long for the days when futbol was a sport enjoyed in the US exclusively by effete cider-drinking snobs with European pretensions.

The rest of you can carry on pissing on each other at whatever it is they're calling Giants Stadium now. Don't bother with soccer -- too much diving (right!), the refs suck (too true!), there's not enough scoring (fuckin A!), what the hell is that guy with the long hair doing running around like a big gaylord (I know, totally!), etc., etc.

point taken. mea culpa or whatever it is.....

so from now on the type of constructive criticism that we do WRT to improving really well-thought-out-already sports won't be used re. soccer.

say baseball or basketball, we can post and say this rule sucks and should be replaced or fixed in some manner, EVEN though the sport is already successful in the US.

clearly good intentions directed to suggested changes to improve the game of futbol (hi TY!) are not acceptable as it implies a game that only catches on in countries that have no good sports*, or in America with people who can't play real sports, is not already a perfect game.

*see the quick adoption of basketball as the most popular sport in more and more countries where soccer was once king.

Well, the basic rules were put together by public school grads who, being English, obviously know better than you.

Basketball wins! It is officially The Greatest Sport In The Entire World! Congratulations!

Does this mean we can dispense with the chin-stroking meditations on the myriad failings of Association Football by people who watch the professional game once every four years or so, clearly dislike it, and have no idea that the topics they're flogging have been debated to death for about the last 20 years, if not 100?

when is the last time any real change was made to your game? if people have complained about these things for decades why haven't they been fixed? because your game is perfect, and no one can complain or suggest a change, right? but we're the bores?

Does that mean we should shut down the politics board, too, for essentially the same reason?

On the plus side, someone called about a job (and a good one too)!

I assume by good job you mean a job that require you to hire me as outside counsel? Preferably with some work that I can delegate to Chinaski, so I'll get a cut without doing anything.

Any other job would be below you.

You're saying it will be more interesting if we keep debating these stupid issues for another 20, if not 100, years, even though we're bored silly after 2 weeks?

Damn, these Europeans really are dimwitted.

Thanks for the shout-out. I was miffed when you ignored my suggestion to change the rules of basketball, but I now understand that it wasn't acceptable because it implied the game isn't already perfect.

No. I'm saying the "I guess soccer would be ok if they changed X" discussion as conducted by people who readily admit they see nothing in the game in the first place is about as entertaining and pointful* as a "baseball is boring" discussion carried on exclusively among Scottish people.

*yes it is a word, because I said so.

You are dangerously close to a foul truth.

In every conversation on every topic, I find that people are boring in inverse relationship to their education on the subject. There are books. I'm just saying.

So, what you've been doing is *not* participating in the discussion? I don't know if the board'd handle it if you decide to engage.
