I just saw some recent pics as well. I think she looks terrific, if not too bulky for my tastes.

Can't comment on Capriati, as I haven't seen a recent pic.

Is the theory here that, if you can find some way to be offended by something, then that must have been the meaning?

I think it has more to do with muscle mass and development. If you want to take the position that steroid use does not result in an inordinate kind and quantity of development, noticable to the eye, well, . . .

Apparently. Or she must be male. HILARIOUS.

And I know you didn't mean to be offensive, and you certainly don't need to apologize to me Coltrane, though I appreciate it. As you have the right to make whatever joke you want, people have the right to find it amusing or not. I found it not.

I think the real question isn't whether anyone is a man, but whether anyone else agrees with me that Venus--and Melissa Rivers particularly, though not a tennis player--looks like a horse.

And of course they're not men. They're just better tennis players than you.

Agreed, and my point exactly.

It's sort of history you see Darcy. Paigow "leaves" and people beg her to stay, and she might leave for a while, or not, but, she comes back.

I've been waiting for about two years to see this headline: "Capriati's skirt too short! Penis pops out!" However, I just saw another picture of Serena in a bathing suit, and I see no evidence of either a penis or any attempt at disguising the penis a la tucking. I will refuse to accept any answer that claims they are actually women...
Serena's clearly a chick. Now Capriati... she may be a hermaphrodite. I think there may be some reverse form of Klinefelter's Syndrome that women like Martina and Capriati get. They all have horse faces and way too much acne for their ages.

I still say Sarah Jessica Parker is a hermaphrodite.

nope. that's why i phrased my question as a question.

from your clarification, it sounds like the theory (one theory) is that if a woman -- or perhaps any person, male or female -- has certain muscle size and/or shape, they must be using steroids. is that closer to the mark?

i wouldn't dispute that steroid use results in muscle mass, etc., but i do think it's insulting to athletes who work very hard to do what they do to assume that i can tell just by looking at someone that they use steroids.

i know some people do use steroids. and not all athletes work hard. but i also think the human body can do astonishing things, and varies immensely in terms of shape, size, strengths and abilities across people.

am i spelling athlete wrong? looks odd.

Speaking of tennis players, did anyone else read the article where Venus is starting her own interior design biz? I'm not sure if she's just planning for the future after tennis or if she's tired of everyone pointing out that her little sister is beating her and planning on getting out sooner than expecte.

Either way, I'm hoping the Williams' sisters taste in tennis outfits isn't a glimpse of their design sense.

I played tennis with Melissa Rivers last week. She might still be lingering from the effects of spending two weeks in the Aussie Rainforest, but she SUCKED. No backhand at all. And don't get me started on her serve . . .

Bottle Rocket is a must see movie. If you liked Rushmore or Royal Tenenbaums in the least, go see Wes' first (and in many ways, best) movie. Plus, Inez is HOT. And it's got Applejack/Kumar. I will not debate this.

Finally, WTF is "squishing your head," Paigs. If'n you're referring to the Kids in the Hall set-piece, it's "I'm crushing your head," (which can only be countered by the "nobody home" thumb gambit). So: NOBODY HOME.

A. Sorry if that came off bitchy.

B. There's no absolute, and exercise will do great things, but when a certain stage of muscle development is reached, yeah, the prediction of steroid use is fairly reliable, esp. when combined withe the presence of some other physical changes they provoke.

I think Serena is rather striking, not in the with -a-stick kind of way. Venus, not so much. But despite their muscle build they both present themselves as pretty feminine from what I've seen.

i guess i don't know enough about stages and the other physical changes. are we talking voice deepening, facial hair, things like that? do serena and capriati have them? (just curious, not trying to argue for its own sake). do men who take steroids get the same side effects?

I saw that. I think she realizes, correctly, that her younger sis is both a better tennis player and more attractive woman than her. The worst thing about the former fact is that Richard Williams has been proven correct that Serena would, in time, become the better player.

Not being a fan of the "less is more" approach of interior design, or tennis dress, I agree with your hope. I can assure you that I want my interior design to cover me from all angles. I don't particularly relish curtains that cover only, say, the upper corners of the windows. Or neon carpeting.

Venus is in the enviable position of having such incredibly deep pockets plus a well-known name, that she, unlike most interior designers, will have a decent chance of making it through many lean years before she can actually strike it rich.
