I went to an elite day school with a pretty robust local network, and it's pretty remarkable how often it comes into play. My siblings who are more socially active than I am use it more often, but when I do, it can be door opening. What's weird about it is that as I've gotten older, I find it to be more useful. My college is tiny and in California. It has an excellent reputation, but I don't run into alums very often. My high school is also tiny with an excellent reputation. I run into alums daily, and they tend to be in high places in this city. And they're not nearly as stuffy as I remember them in high school. My husband went to a prep school in Cleveland whose mission was to "churn out Republicans" (his words) during his formative years, the local public high school where no one noticed that he was failing his freshman year, and finally in an alternative Quaker boarding school in Maine that closed his senior year due to lack of students. Then the Marines. The Marines was the most useful in terms of training, but none were particularly network building. |

And, as it turns out, I may have confused Lorde (which is not a trio of sisters) with the band I named. But why do you disagree with my premise? Are the sister duos I named too twee or granola-crunchy for you? |

My kids go to public school. The public high school, however, is CRAP. I don't give a frog's fat ass about your opinion as to where I send my children to high school. And I don't give a shit where your kid goes. My point in the original post was that, despite having a familiarity with lots of boarding schools, as the town where I live has 8 of them within 30 minutes' drive of me (lots of public events take place there, elementary kids have sports practices there, etc.), Exeter was so far beyond my expectations, it surprised me. Perhaps if you'd gone to Exeter, you could have figured that out. Oh, wait. You're above lowering yourself to that sort of elitist education. Whatever. More space for my kids! |
So
A woman with whom I am Facebook friends will be vacationing in the location of my upcoming nuptuals immediately after the big day, while we will be enjoying post-wedding relaxation. I know this only because of Facebook. Do I mention that we will be there to her? Does it matter that I'm primarily Facebook friends with her because of having been very attracted to her when we worked together in college?
I'll probably say nothing, but I thought the scenario interesting. A long time ago, I was her supervisor. |

"That's $67.50." "You take Diner's Club, yes?" "Sir, are you smashing that compact disc?" "Actually, I'm crushing it into the tile with my loafer, after which point I'm going to throw it in that trash hole in front of the milk-- the one into which people pour the excess in their overfilled coffees." "Anything else?" "Three more of those cds." "She and Him?" "Yes. Oh-- God, this feels good. The cracking, the crunching. It's so--" "No need to explain, sir. We actually have to listen to that cd sometimes... They pipe it in... There is. No. Way. To. Stop. It." "I'm so sorry--" "I will kill Him someday. And Her. It is my dream... And then Jack Johnson." |
