Most of the edges, I would worry about getting caught on a tree or outcropping and surviving. This seems preferable.

Why would someone pay $75 to jump off from there when they could do it for free from the side of the Canyon, two steps to the left?

That costs $75? Well, that determined for good whether or not I'd do such a thing. I'd save the money and put it towards a raft trip instead.

A suicidal crazy might not bother to pay, but a homicidal crazy would probably find $75 a bargain.

Maybe money doesn't mean so much to them, since they'll be dead and all. And they enjoy envisioning the post-mortem press.

There is something cleaner about jumping from there than there would be with trying to jump off an outcropping. Not that I'm a suicidal crazy, mind you. I'd just think that the Indian tribe might have worried about that when planning the design.

I thought it was $25?

It's not like they're going to need the money, or thinking all that rationally, but having to wait to get through the turnstile might be a deterrant.

Hmmmmmm. Maybe they did and decided any press is good press.

I read this book this summer...

Apparently, people die falling over the edge way more than you might expect.

On purpose, or by accident? Hmmmmmm.

If I were jumping, I'd do it Thelma and Louise style. get a motorcyle going about 100 and shoot right out into the middle of the thing.

...With my luck, they'd only have mopeds available from the rental shp that day. Dying within 50 feet of a Vespa is never acceptable.

I've been to the Grand Canyon three times. Each was a two or three hour detour on a larger road trip to or from California. It's a pretty damned good place to stop, with every wordly possession you own in the parking lot, and sit with your dog for a few minutes and wonder whether or not this change in your life is a good idea.

I really would like to spend more time there.

I'm sure all the park rangers and other 'rescuers' will appreciate your dramatic gesture when they are hauling your corpse and the remnants of the bike out of the Canyon.

Dissent. The homicidal would endeavor to save money, as he'd be on the run shortly.

The suicidal would splurge like Pacino in "Scent of a Woman." He'd get a triple latte on the way and probably drive there in the Jaguar upgrade from Hertz.
