My friend is also terrible at subtlety.

Thank you everyone, this has been very useful. Food for thought.

*i took ethics pass/fail, but the real issue here is not getting canned- and showing client how much it could save by opening up my billing records is one risky thing to do-

Two years ago I was running with the CEO/controlling shareholder of a client who had also become a personal friend. We were talking generally about law firm economics and partnership deals and somewhat more specifically my deal. I inserted the story of another lawyer I knew of who had gone in house and as a result the client saved about 750K/year (he knew the client, a closely held company, and could correctly speculate that the 750K in savings went into the principals pockets).

That's called planting the seed.

Now I am the GC/Acquisitions guy at his company.

That's called reaping what you sow.

YMMV.

The first time I read your post I was upset. The second time I read it I realized you've spent the last 10 years or so on these boards looking (and failing, evidently) to find some means to tear down my substantial and well regarded internet presence. And the third time I read it I realized why that was. To spend so much time and energy and apparent relish being so bitter and judgmental about someone you don't know and a legend you lack the sophistication to truly appreciate: How sad for you. Me? I take comfort in the thousands of people, men and women, both on and off the internets, who take me at my premium value and see in me the better angels of our nature, who don't project their own failures and insecurities upon me, and who are kind and compassionate instead of… well, instead of like you.:):D:P

It's too bad we're so far from 5K, because that would have been a beautiful coda on the thread you named after yourself.

Honest answer, yes, just the other day I felt a little verklempt while at the urinal in an otherwise empty bathroom. I almost twittered about it, but that seemed a little tmi, in a bad way.

Also, for the record, now that outability is not an issue, they were really Taiwanese, but I suspected more than a couple of being Red Chinese agents.

No offence.

And in fairness, I do like the wine.

Nah, plaintiffs' lawyers are fist-fighting for office space.
