Having a car was a huge deal for me in high school because it was just me and my mom at home and she worked full time. So the only way I could get myself to a job after school and home in my public-transit-limited town was to have a car (plus the calculus for ever borrowing a car goes down dramatically when you do the switch from two parents, two cars to one parent, one car). For me, I think it was a good lesson in responsibility to have a car payment at 16. And I was very careful with the car (no taking it airborne, though I engaged in plenty of risky non-car-related activities) probably in part because I was paying for it myself. I did inherit (literally it was bequeathed to me, but that is a distinction only for a lawyer board) a car from my dad at 18, but by then owning a car was old hat.

One more question: anyone know anyone in Chile (Santiago or Valparaiso areas specifically)? I'm less than a week away from a 3 week trip by myself and would love to have a contact or two there just in case I don't meet people right away. I'm feeling pretty good about meeting people on Easter island, less so in Santiago... Not that I don't love my own company, of course. :)

1. Proof that the Universe has a sense of humor -- sitting across from your correspondent was a hot young brunette in leather (faux or no?) leggings and an artfully distressed Spence sweatshirt reading "Lolita."

2. One pompous finance brah to another: "No, I'm supposed to meet the Twitter people at the Mandarin at noon." Part of me wanted to ask him how he got the sweet catering gig, but I was in a good mood because I had an early number at the 60 Centre cattle call, so I settled for pretending to read his iPad over his shoulder from Union Square to GCT.

3. Realize that I am near a toddler holding an uncapped cup of Starbucks hot chocolates. Smells good, but worried about the risk to my navy blue "going to court" 2 for $295 Jos. A. Banks middle school guidance counselor suit, so I move away, rolling my eyes at the stupidity of the kid's mom or nanny. Older woman with Jehovah's Witness pamphlet catches my eye roll and "mmm-hmmms" in agreement.

4. Elbow different pompous young brah on stairs from subway to street who is mesmerized by his iPhone screen. See as I walk past him that he's watching "Wolf of Wall Street" trailer.

5. Walk past carpenters rehabbing interior of lobby next door and hear a guys who sounds exactly like one of my uncles trying to make a good argument that the Yankees need to re-sign Kevin Youklis. Laugh.

I read this, and I picture you using "You're gonna be all browned up in no time" -- spoken in Barry White's voice -- as a pick-up line.

It's making me somewhat uncomfortable.
