Anyway, I need a car with three-row seating that is not a minivan. Some Buick got good reviews with Consumer Reports, but ... a BUICK?!? Family-man Tiger Woods notwithstanding, a BUICK!?

I have the Volvo XC90, which I don't want to buy again. It's the right size, but too many blind spots, goes through tires like e/o goes through boyfriends, and at higher mileages, the transmission goes.

A few weeks ago, people pooh-poohed the Audi Q7 and the BMW X5, so what else is there?

Go with a truck. If all you're doing is driving around the area, gas issues aren't that important.

Toyota Highlander (Supposedly, excellent)
Toyota 4Runner (Super Durable)
Toyota Sequoia (So so reviews, but even at worst, you know you'll get tons of maintenance free mileage out of it)
Toyota Landcruiser/Lexus LX (The shit, but you have to get it used and its awful on gas)
Lexus RX (Durable and loaded, but ugly)
Acura MDX (Ugly, but as good as the RX)

The Q7's overpriced. If you're going that far, get a Cayenne. Seriously, it's a tighter truck, and the base one is around the same price as the Q7 and BMW stuff.

If cash isn't an issue, or much of one, get a new or recent Landcruiser or a Benz G-wagen. Both are awful on gas, but tricked out with every imaginable option, excellent off-road, super-durable and will drive for 200k miles easily. (Well, except that when you tune up the Benz you'll get staggering bills). Haven't heard much good about the Benz GL series. Pretty car, but the reviews don't suggest its a good buy. Normally, I'd never even suggest such a silly purchase as a Gwagen, but I've seen fairly new ones selling for amazing prices due to their high price point, novelty and terrible gas reputations.

The VW Taureg is supposed to be a great truck, but a maintenance nightmare.

Oh, and GMC Denalis/Suburbans are good trucks as well. They're just too damned big to get around in easily (that same problem applies to a Sequoia, btw).

I needn't raise the issue of Land Rovers. They aren't credible enough vehicles to even seriously discuss.

That's awesome. Did you ever read the book called "The Professor and the Madman" about the creation of the OED? I thought it was great, and it made me respect that book even more.

I used to lose at Scrabble with a guy who worked at the OED.

MDX or Pilot, and you can't go wrong.

I wouldn't buy a GM. Too much money for too little car and too many headaches. The X5 is pretty sweet but a fortune.

And I had a 4runner that I DID NOT like.

Better off getting the MDX. More bells and whistles and better warranty than the equivalent pilot for not much more.

Also can consider the Subaru Tribeca.

I would ask what magical edit function powers I am ignorant of, but since I have found the "editing" power of the edit function to be all that I need, I don't care what the answer is.

the exchange:

"I think you are wrong!

oh, now that I've thought more about it, perhaps you were right."

is something one could do with the edit function- but query, couldn't the edit function also be better used to change this all to:

"upon reflection, I realize you are right."

If my original post, as edited, said something along the lines of, "I think you are wrong!

oh, now that I've thought more about it, perhaps you were right," then your response might be relevant. But I promise to consult you in advance before I next edit a post so I can fully exploit the function's power.

thanks, I'm not trying to fix the harm you've done in the past. I'm trying to improve the future for us all. we're all in this together!
