Juventis is apparently playing a friendly against the Shamrock Rovers. Is there any ettiquette I need to know when I head to the pub?

Eta: are the rovers your team? I thought it was Celtic. But these guys have the white and green horizontal stripes.

This morning, 8-y.o. son was teasing 7-y.o. daughter with the "X and Y sitting in a tree... K-I-S-S-I-N-G.." song, but with his own lyrics. They went like this:

"[Sister] and Cora, sitting in a tree. They are both gay. First comes love, then comes being more gay, because marriage isn't for gay people."

I think I have a budding Jerry Falwell on my hands. Oh, the ignominy.

I liked the first one better.

Were you out of state at the time? Has he asked to move to a state where such abomination is *not* the law of the land?

How does he feel about goatfish, especially when Irish and Spanish chicks are involved?

I did consider schooling him on the fact that we live in a state where that particular abomination is allowed, and are bordered to the north by an equally enlightened state (at least, I think that's still true there), but figured it wouldn't really change anything, as the goal had been accomplished -- that is, upsetting his sister.

Goatfish, however, are another story.

Fugee Mom lives on the farm with her two dogs. One is an elderly golden retriever and the other is a 6 yo miniature schnauzer. I don't think the golden is going to make it through the winter and my sister and I have been talking about what kind of dog she should get next. It will be an adult shelter dog but she doesn't want another big dog like the golden.

Any recommendations for a medium to smallish (but not a little yappy dog) with an easy going temperament that would make a nice second companion dog for a still active senior? If there is a dog with the temperament of a golden but in a smaller package, that would be ideal.

Dogs that are bred for a task are optimized for that task. I'm constantly amazed at people who make the case that all dogs bred for fetching things, or pulling carts, or even killing other dogs are equally appropriate for human companionship, when we would never say they're equally good at hunting or pulling carts or killing other dogs. Bottom line: a dog bred for the sole purpose of being a companion will be better at that job than one of the "cooler" breeds that looks like its owner does something with it.

I share your dislike of yappy little lapdogs, but they are unarguably better for a senior, even an active one. Ten years is a long time to remain active for the sake of one's dog.

A Cocker Spaniel is a good compromise if she really dislikes the toy breeds. I'm partial to Brittanys, too. I second the recommendation of Corgis as big dogs in a small package, but they're herders and are known to nip things that they think are running inappropriately, including grandchildren.

The problem with the little yappy dogs is that their barks are so high pitched and loud high-pitched sounds are really painful for Fugee Mom.

I should have mentioned that she lives on a farm and the dogs are let outside to run around a very very large yard (a couple acres) for good parts of the day.

The funny thing is that even though they get to run around all they want, they still want to go for walks which is good for mom.

We had Spaniels when I was younger so that may be a good breed.

Springer Spaniels are beautiful but the show lines have a genetic disorder called -- I shit you not -- Rage Syndrome. (I see that Wikipedia has it also amongst the Cocker Spaniels, but the idea of an angry Cocker Spaniel is LOL.)

I want a Brittany in the worst way. I've been assured I can have one when our girls are potty trained -- my wife says she can handle the daily eliminatory needs of only so many creatures at a time.

I hadn't thought about it before, but your obsessive regularity probably spoiled her before the kids came along, huh?

I have known three cocker spaniels, all three were mean (to human and dog), barky creatures.

I'm not sure what you mean by yappy dogs. Beagles will do a bit of howling and will bark at strangers and in play, but are going to be pretty good for the open spaces of a farm.

Best in pairs, since they are pretty active but keep each other entertained.
