I endorse greek yogurt.

And speaking of former vegans, this article on slate about hipster hunters sort of cracks me up:
Quote:

I think the evolution of the new lefty urban hunter goes something like this:

2006: Reads Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma, about the ickyness of the industrial food complex. Starts shopping at a farmer’s market.
2008: Puts in own vegetable garden. Tries to go vegetarian but falls off the wagon.
2009: Decides to only eat “happy meat” that has been treated humanely.
2010: Gets a chicken coop and a flock of chickens.
2011: Dabbles in backyard butchery of chickens. Reads that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg decided to only eat meat he killed himself for a year.
2012: Gets a hunting permit, thinking “how hard can it be? I already totally dominate Big Buck Hunter at the bar.”

Hunting is undeniably in vogue among the bearded, bicycle-riding, locavore set. The new trend might even be partly behind a recent 9 percent increase from 2006 to 2011 in the number of hunters in the United States after years of decline. Many of these new hunters are taking up the activity for ethical and environmental reasons.
I can only imagine the cognitiave dissonance that this causes some in the gun set.

Has anyone considered the hipster lefties are just rationalizing an irresistable urge to own and shoot guns?

I think a lot of them see themselves as environmentalist. Deer herds around here need thinning because there are no predators anymore. Of course, a decent percent of hunters are drunk Neanderthals too, so some of them are probably bothered by hipster hunters.

I am certain that they have pacifist friends that have brought it up.

Yeah. Few people are more bloodthirsty than suburbanites whose azaleas are being eaten by deer. And it's also delightfully cynical of them the call the deer overbred instead of admitting their backyard was where the deer had lived for generations before the woods were cut down to build their McMansions.

Page 2 of the article goes into that.

God Loves Democrats

I am so happy Jim DeMint has been freed up to recruit Senate Candidates full time! This is an early Christmas!

I read that defection as a guy with no retirement savings saying to himself, "Oh, fuck... My party's screwed. This country's fucked. I have to cash out now before the shithouse totally goes up in flames."

(Seriously, DeMint has no net worth.)

Retirement benefits for Senators are pretty good. On the other hand, if he got a severance deal like Dick Armey....

The guy did nothing as a Senator - has zero accomplishments, absolutely zero - other than recruit fringe right candidates. He enabled Angle and the Witch and all sorts of others like that. He's going to be doing it full time and have more cash to do it with. This is just fantastic news.

I'm willing to chip in for his retirement to keep the crazy coming, and Reid ought to be willing to as well. This guy is a big part of what got Obama a second term, and an even bigger part of why the Dems are the Senator majority.

He's getting $1mil at Heritage. And he'll get speaking fees like mad - even more so than he could have already.

What I think will be interesting is his interfacing with a think tank. Heritage may be severely right wing, but there is thinking going on. Based on much of the stuff you've already cited, I don't see a hell of a lot of thinking going on in DeMint's head. Or fundraising taking place under his stewardship. He appears to have worked to defeat all the establishment candidates in primaries. I can't imagine big business, which lost what should have been GOP control of the Senate because of DeMint and Co., have much interest in donating to an organization he's running.

Heritage is the kind of "think tank" that is excited when they can put Ph.D. after an author's initials. There's a lot more "tank" than "think" there. This isn't Brookings.

DeMint is going to grow their membership numbers and increase their role as a far-right anchor tied around the Republicans' neck. Want a bet that he'll be peddling wares on Limbaugh within days of getting the new office? He'll pull in contributions from that great mass of right wing crazies, the people who buy Limbaugh books. DeMint's candidates have been pretty well funded.

I've known both the responsible hunters and the Neanderthals. The Neanderthals poached deer from the sunroof of a Honda Accord.*

*I think they did this in your home state.

So the NRSC burned a bunch of cash supporting Todd Akin, even though they'd said publicly they had withdrawn their support.

The levels of stupidity of this move are astounding, but I guess that doesn't matter as long as they were standing up for core Republican values.

I'd never heard of someone filibustering their own bill before. This is an impressive accomplishment, Senator McConnell. Kudos.
