Finally, I am probably as open-minded as anyone on this board when it comes to music, and I hate to seem like a ferrets-type crank, but I call bullshit on reggae. The only themes are smoking pot, legalizing pot, being high on pot, and the inexplicable worship of some Ethiopian emperor as the messiah. I am certainly not hostile to the first three themes, but not when they are the ONLY THINGS YOU SING ABOUT. And the music itself is beyond simplistic -- it is basic and repetitive to the point of being moronic. Sure, the constant chicka chicka of the guitar can seem soothing if you are too high to get up off the couch (been there), but that is the beginning and the end of the usefulness of this genre of music.

R-e-S-p-e-c-t isn't repetitive?

I was just kidding. I mean, not about the whole not caring what you think thing. I meant that. But about the hostility toward reggae. I love reggae.

If you want to try reggae with less pot and a non-Ethiopian messiah, there's always Matisyahu.

The other is that the basic rule you describe is certainly clear for anyone who cares about process, but I think most voters go with the idea that whoever gets the most votes wins. If Trump is leader -- delegates, votes, whatever, if Cruz doesn't catch him -- and then doesn't get the nomination, that is going to sit very poorly with a lot of people who are Republicans in the sense that they voted in the GOP primaries and caucuses.

It is very hard to imagine Cruz will catch Trump in any category, especially given the shellacking that looks like it is coming in New York, and possibly in other mid-Atlantic states.

This article really buries the lede. Maryland poll shows Trump does better at unifying the Republicans in November than Cruz.

I'm kind of sick of this conversation, too, given that it's my fucking vote to cast and if I want to use it stupidly, that's my fucking right.

Would it be cliched old white guy of me to mention that "Graceland" was my first experience in knowing that an American album included and had been influenced by the music of African Africans (as opposed to African Americans, a fact that even I was aware of)?

Probably, but this just goes to show you what you are dealing with. Anyway, thanks!

Never listened much to the blues, did you?

True. We have to defend people's rights to say idiotic things, cast dumb votes, and practice hateful religions.

As long as weapons are not involved.

If you don't want people to react to stupid shit you do, don't describe the stupid shit you plan on doing. I'd prefer you not do stupid fucking shit, but I guess we can't have everything.

Though I will likely vote for my party's nominee, I'm with Wonk on this one. If you are in a state whose electoral votes are undeniably going one way or the other, I've got no problem considering my vote an act of self expression. You give me the write-in option, and I won't hesitate to use it under some circumstances.

Sure, but I meant music from people who live in Africa the continent, not the music from Americans whose ancestors were brought here in chains.

ETA: probably not "much" but you get the idea.

I'm fine with this, but dismayed at the choice of Bernie as an act of self-expression. The more this goes on the more I waiting for him to get beyond three bullet points on a single slide.

Really? Socialism has come to this? It's good Engels is dead and doesn't have to see this.

You know who is great at voting as self-expression? The Icelanders. Pirate Party!!!

My real sweet spot is early Maytals, like From The Roots-era stuff. I know Matisyahu a bit, but only a bit. But you inspired me to see if there is any old Jewish funk for the Daily Dose. I did not look too hard. Mostly I found Jewish-themed parodies of Uptown Funk. I also found a song by a guy names Hebrew Rogers called "Can't Buy Soul." I dig it! So it is today's Daily Dose of Funk, because you can buy the presidency, but you can't buy soul:

I may have to start with a daily dose of Afro-pop or African jazz. We can begin with an old friend, De Great Steady Bongo

Steady is also the leadman in a pickup band called The Sierra Leone Refugee All-Stars

A vote for Steady would be a real act of self-expression.

I see your point, but I do not believe in this. Presidents need a clear expression of support to get shit done. If Hillary is the nominee and she is denied a convincing victory on the popular vote, it hamstrings her. And self expression is great, but no one gives a shit about your protest vote.
