Why do people do this? Co-counsel kept putting ellipses in brackets in a recent brief, and thereby driving me nuts. We know you changed it, that is what the ellipsis means, and as for the small chance the ellipsis is in what you are quoting, so fucking what.

What do you do when you change a quoted capital letter to lowercase, then?

Typically I just yell about it at anonymous people on an internet chat board.

I did it mainly to bother you. Success!!

Actually I couldn't recall the exact way to space ellipsis so I just threw them into brackets to avoid the internal spacing conflict I was having. I knew that wasn't the correct way to do it and yet it wasn't bothering me enough to look it up. But now that I know how much it peeves you, expect brackets and ellipsis galore!

This is going to be awesome ... !!!! If there's anything I love .... it's gratuitous use[s] of ellipses . . . when other punctuation would be more appropriate . . . . In fact, whenever my husband and I drive by the Ellipse ... I pause ... and say ... D.C. needs more of those!!! And he says ... "[t]hat's a real knee-slapper!" LOL!!!

It rarely happens on this particular board, but occasionally one will see ellipses at the end of the sentence to highlight the post's implied punch line. This Crayola-colored technique is the sign of a flaccid mind and reflects the comic timing of Fozzie Bear.

All of which is to say, please feel free to continue with this let's-use-ellipses-annoyingly-to-irritate-Adder theme, but if during that time, anyone uses the ellipsis to higlight some lame punchline I will organize a coalition of the like-minded to hunt you down and fucking kill you.

Carry on.

Feel free, although it peeves me a lot more then it happens in papers that will be filed in court with my name on them.

If your name is going to be on the papers, can't you just yell "[n]o bracketed ellipses[!]" at co-counsel? Scouring powder on the face is optional.

Feel free to call me flaccid minded, but yes, I have indeed used the ellipsis in that way.

But for the record, it wasn't the ellipsis using that bothered me. It was the brackets around them.

As linkage, they're ideal. Say you want to shovel fifty thoughts into a space that ought to fit twenty... Ellipses! You can chop formal sentences down to phrases and create a paragraph that bounds forward where normal language would start/complete thought/finish/start again. Good way to make shit seamless.

We have no operatives in the Pacific Northwest at the moment, so you might have to wait a bit.

Alternatively, we could stage a to-the-death Prius road rally. Winner gets to pry the battery from the dead carcass of the loser and convert to a pure-electric car.

That's what happens when your fashion designers drop acid. Coke (in the '80's) wasn't much better. It took until the '90's (heroin and crystal meth) to stage a full recovery.
