The bit about him not being a true believer comes from inside sources. People who know him now and knew him in the past all say his only gods are ambition and self-promotion. Yeah, his dad's a religious loon. But that doesn't mean the kid's stupid. Quite to to contrary, Cruz is highly intelligent and cunning as all fuck.
Look, I'm sure some of that dominionist nonsense rubbed off on Ted (most notably the lunatic teaching that he is god's chosen candidate). But nobody as smart as Cruz, with a history of being such an exclusively self-obsessed operator, could be a true Jesus Freak. You have to be dumb to buy into fundamentalism. This guy isn't dumb. He's a shrewd nihilist who knows how to sell himself to fundamentalist and evangelical rubes. No different than all the other liars who bullshit the bible belt and midwest every election year. The only candidates wearing Jesus Freakism on their sleeves who really seem to mean it are Huckabee and Santorum. Neither has 1/5 the intellectual horsepower of Cruz.
That and, let's face it - no true Jesus fanatic would be comfortable lying as much as Cruz has throughout his political career. |
