There a word missing there someplace ... something like "sane".

Just console yourself with the thought that every civil rights violation that happens to you is also gonna happen to Alberto Gonzales. The thought that it was also happening to Ari Fleischer was one of the few things that tipped the scales for the International Jewish Conspiracy when they secretly voted not to let anti-Semitism automatically sunset in 2000.

you need to give links. it may be that on average we read enough to always know what's up, but that's because Ty reads almost everything written. most of us are much more poorly read.

I'll give you a hint: It relates to immigration, not to whether Obama has a valid birth certificate.

Although, it wouldn't surprise me if some cop in Arizona demanded to see Obama's green card: I mean, if he wasn't born in the US -- and he hasn't proven that he was -- then what's his basis for being here? He certainly was never naturalized and never applied for a long-term visa. Back to Kenya, I say.

Seriously? You vanish for, what, four months -- and this is how you announce your return?

It is the solemn duty of every non-Hispanic white in Arizona to interrupt every cop they see and push their birth certificate in his/her face, while saying they need to confirm they aren't committing a crime by being in this country. Whites of good faith need to overwhelm law enforcement's ability to selectively target members of one race for enforcement of this law.

It's a fucking embarassment.

This is a good idea. Except that cops tend to have guns. (I would also say that they have better things to do, but apparently that's not the case in Arizona.)

But you just know that there are people in AZ who are echoing my thought -- "Next time Obama's here, we have to go after him for being an illegal." And not as a joke.

When I say they should push their birth certificates in cops' faces, I don't mean forcibly. I mean in a "officer I need a moment of your time to review my birth certificate." Arizona is 48% blue -- there have got to be enough white folks who think this is bullshit to make the cops regret it was ever enacted. But I'm open to other ideas for civil disobedience. Maybe going up to cops and demanding they prove legal residence, then filing ethics complaints against them when they can't/won't?

I'm just planning on avoiding the state all together. We're driving to Burning Man this year. Texas->New Mexico->Colorado->Utah->Nevada it is.

Yeah, fuck those motherfuckers.

Section 11-1051(B) of the law says "a reasonable attempt SHALL be made, when practicable, to determine the immigration status of the person" "where reasonable suspicion exists that the person is an alien who is unlawfully present in the United States . . . ." It then says that the person's immigration status SHALL be verified with INS. So if I walk up to a cop in Arizona and say "I am unable to prove I'm in this country legally," a true statement, it may trigger a duty to call the INS to confirm. I think this needs to be explored as a form of civil disobedience.

I share your feelings about the law, but there is a difference between saying "I am unable to prove I'm in this country legally" and "I'm an alien who is unlawfully present here."

If you say the first part, the smart cop asks "well, are you an alien, or a citizen?" What would your answer be?

Look, I'm usually not the civil disobedience guy, right? I can quarterback this one, but I need some running backs to pick up the fucking ball now and then -- it can't all be hail Marys.
