Put the cops in fear of a civil rights lawsuit for not asking enough white folks for their papers, then give the white folks of Arizona about six months of having to whip out their documents for every cop they see, and we'll see how many of them persist in believing this law is a great idea.

I have unorthodox views of immigration policy, and actually have some sympathy for the notion of enforceable borders, but the people of Arizona lost any right to my sympathy for the supposed burden of being a border state. As far as I'm concerned they're just an asshole state now.

Seems like the challenges we all want to make to the law are really facial, not as applied.

i have atticus on ignore, but consider this- this new law has yet to be matched with any guidelines, and it seems impossible for anything workable to come from that effort, so it's likely it's bluster with no real result. meanwhile atticus lives in a state that has banned homosexual marriage.

shouldn't he work to fix that instead of dogging other states?

Except that Atticus is Mr. Tyranny of the Majority. The people of California have spoken, which usually is enough for him.

The good news is that at least two law profs seem to think it is clearly unconstitutional. Perhaps Atticus could re-direct his litigiousness in that direction.

This is America, dammit. We can sue for anything.

Or maybe the University of Phoenix. Wait. No. That won't work.

Just don't hand that shit out at ASU. Big prollem.

Imagine Rush gives you forty seconds of airtime, no questions asked, in the middle of his show. Then imagine that the last thing he says before he throws it to you in the booth is that Obama's financial regulatory reform package is actually pretty good and deserves his listeners' support. Do you spend your forty seconds pointing out that what Rush just said is 100% inconsistent with everything else Rush has said?

Actually, nevermind. I think I know the answer already.

Seems to me the best way to fight this is to write (the old fashioned way) to local tourism boards, hotel chains and restaurants informing them that they will receive not a single dollar of your money until the law is repealed.

It's what changed their minds on MLK day, though not until they lost the chance to host a superbowl to the issue.

ARS 11-1051(G). I think it's within the bounds of this section to allege that law enforcement officials have implemented a policy of NOT asking Caucasians for ID even though there may be reasonable suspicion they lack documents, especially if there's a pattern of law enforcement testifying at suppression hearing that their "reasonable suspicion" arose from non-racial factors ("there were a lot of guys in that car, and that's unusual for that part of town at that time of day").

i think "wearing soccer jersies" might be something to flag. they'll catch a few americans, but mostly that'll boil it down to ones they need to speak to.

Where are the Tea-Party libertarians on this Arizona thing? Aren't they supposed to be against an oppressive government that takes away our liberties?

I have called in to Rush and Bababooeyed the show a few times. Fwiw. Although in fairness I have done the same thing to Randi Rhodes.
