I don't like Roast so much, but next time I'm there I'll try the sprouts.

I thought about messaging you and then standing you up, but I forgot. Sorry.

You and TM are probably right. I read into what I thought Joe "meant" -- no question. But I think that it's fair to do so with people who have a history. For example, despite the outcries when GHWB introduced his grandkids to President Reagan as "the little brown ones over there," I didn't think that it meant the then VP was anti-Mexican.

(I do think that Poppy was willing to let others stir up the flames of racism to his advantage, hello Willie Horton, but it's not the same as being racist yourself. And one could come up with all sorts of examples about Democratic pols doing the same kind of thing. Heck, Apple's lawyers allegedly tried to subtly raise anti-Asian bias in closing arguments in the Samsung trial.)

I'm Not Thurgreed (though I play him on TV), but maybe he was thinking of you when he read this part:

Quote:

But there are some objective truths here. Racism is a virus that is growing clever at avoiding detection. Race consciousness is real. Racial assumptions and prejudices are real. And racism is real. But these realities can operate without articulation and beneath awareness. For those reasons, some can see racism where it is absent, and others can willfully ignore any possibility that it could ever be present. (emphasis supplied)
But I could be wrong.

I hear what you're saying, but contemplating (say) whether Lee Atwater didn't really harbor ill will towards blacks personally doesn't change my impression that he was a race-baiting piece of shit.

If you are benefiting from said racism (like Hillary or McCain* in '08), it's just as racist to me. One of the biggest problems I have with people is when they stand by all quiet-like when fucked up shit is going on. And if you're standing by because it's benefiting you, you are a special breed of asshole.

Wow, so you didn't think much of Atwater! Revelation! But we were talking about your VP Biden.

I thought we kind of established that anyone who links the words, "articulate," and "clean," as some kind of compliment when referring to a black person is most likely an ignorant jackass.

YOU were talking about "our" VP Biden. (Who is yours, I wonder?)

NotBob and I were discussing his parenthetical comment. Adjust the blinders.

You did make that opinion clear. Gattigap is of a breed that is not so prone to be negative about a Dem.

To this Average White Guy, "benefiting from" is not as bad as "fanning the flames of." And in 2008, McCain to his credit did more than semi-stop it (though I could be Not Right). And I don't think Romney did any flame-fanning in 2012, did he?

W in the 2000 South Carolina primary against McCain is the most recent flame-fanning in a presidential campaign that I can think of.

Confession -- I have occasionally stood by all quiet-like when fucked up shit is going on. I am Not Proud of myself for that. Most recently it happened after a deposition when counsel for a co-defendant engaged in series of sexist comments about the appearance of a woman lawyer working on the case with his client -- and my client. I have spoken up about that kind of stuff on other occasions, but I didn't this time. I tell myself that it was because I was so surprised by it, but still.
