Credit Card Fraud Question

Say someone (me) had their mail stolen while they were away for the Xmas holidays, and thereafter filing a police report and US mail report.

He later finds out that, apparently, that the thief apparently cashed one of those incessant credit card advance checks that this particular credit card company (Capital One) sends you unsolicited every two weeks.

Say he immediately reports the fraud (immediately being relative, since it took 4 attempts (3 hang ups) and two hours to get past the phone options, initial person in India and get a supervisor) and is finally told they will freeze the fraudulent check charge and mail further information.

Say he receives a new statement - in the new account number - 25 days later, and it still shows the charge, now plus a late charge and interest on the whole thing.

Say he calls the credit card company, and after wasting another hour of being passed around, he is told that - yes, nothing has been done - so sorry, however, you have to call back monday since that's not our job and the division of the fraud department you need to speak to is only open during the week.

I'm sure someone has experience with this type of nightmare.

Besides writing a complaint to Capital One directly about this entire mess, which are the other proper government agencies to complain to?
Not exactly the same nightmare, but my credit card information was stolen shortly before Christmas. I filed a police report and stopped most of the major charges before they went through. Citibank was very co-operative. The police told me that Citi would send me an affidavit to swear out about any other charges that made it through and I would be able to get those charges taken off with the affidavit. Those charges were pretty small, so it doesn't really bug me.

I assume you have canceled your credit card? If so, they should definitely send you the affidavit. If not, call them and demand it.

I'm not sure about government agencies. Definitely the FTC is responsible for identity theft, so I called them and they told me to file fraud alerts with Experian etc., which I have done. There is an awful lot of red tape to go through.

Probably this is not too helpful, but if you haven't made a fraud alert yet, you should do so.

I'm all for it. Ain't much in a megachurch I'd want to see in a bikini.

Is the fact that these people don't live near beaches proof of evolution or intelligent design?

they need to be in more mountainous areas. the venomous snakes found near the ocean are too nippy to be good for speaking in tongues.

Wow. That looks like crap you could easily drown in. Swimming in a dress? Cool.

If I wasn't trying to be nice and welcoming back, I would make a joke about the line "Wholesome Wear" and how a cross dresser would feel about it.

This is definitely evolutionary.

Praise be God, Who works in mysterious ways.

I don't think "non-existant" is a word. The hyphen seems wrong. But I am very slooooow this morning.

Burger, marry me. You are correct -- Slave should have bargained better with Cap One when they entered into the contract. He can bring a suit against them to rectify the situation.

Boobie commentary:

There's a woman in my building who has 4 kids - 3 of them triplets! Anyway, she's always breastfeeding her kids IN THE LOBBY of the building. WTF? She's got an apartment upstairs. The first time I saw her doing it, I thought maybe there was something going on in the apartment and she needed to feed - ok, fine. But what is with the daily feedings in the lobby? I don't get it.

Or you can skip the article and take the test here: https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/index.jsp

According to the (Racial Bias - there are several other tests) test, I am moderately biased against African Americans (or in favor of White Americans, I forget which). I'd be interested to see the results of others, just to see who the liars are. I'd also be interested to see slave's and penske's results on the Arab Muslim bias test.
I know it is more appropriate for the PB, but the same researchers have just concluded that Bush-backers hate black people. (spree: WaPo) They needed a study for that?
