I can't remember what ailment the study subjects were looking to have treated. Was it headaches?

PLF cited one study on headaches, and one on fertility.

But this points to exactly why I am skeptical (for the record, skeptical does not mean absolutely convinced one way or the other), which is that I think one should always be skeptical about a treatment whose mechanism of action can't be explained by anything observable (in other words, talking about unblocking flows of "energy" doesn't cut it). If no one knows why leeches can treat a fevor,* sugar pills can cure cancer, or electroshock therapy can help depression, I happen to think that tells you something.

*I am vaguely aware that there have been some modern applications of leeches that may actually have some modern science behind them.

I stopped talking about boyfriends' schlongs after that. Unless they were ridiculously tiny.

You too dated the tiny tiny ex-boyfriend?

I don't know enough about acupuncture, but I thought that the treatment was based on more than the "relaxation" effect that the needles produce. Otherwise, we could all just listen to Enya and get the same results. In any event, I think the needles were placed in completely wrong places, an on purpose, in order to study whether there was a placebo effect to acupuncture. It seems entiurely plausible to me that there would be a strong placebo effect to acupuncture. Please do not respond with the argument that acupuncture worked for you despite the fact that you were skeptical, so that proves that there is not a placebo effect because 1) that argument proves no such thing, and 2) the fact that there is likely to be a placebo effect with acupuncture in no way rules out that acupuncture could also be effective in many other cases for reasons that are not related to a placebo effect.

A good friend of mine has a tendency to describe every penis she comes across. I generally know a lot more about her boyfriends' and paramours' penis sizes (and performances) than the guys' jobs.

You probably just have really tiny balls, which creates the illusion of a bigger schlong.

It tells you something, but I don't think it tells you what you think it tells you, which is that the treatment is either ineffective or necessarily reliant on a placebo effect. The history of medicine is full of cases of treaments being effective despite an inability to precisely say why. Just because we do not understand how a treatment works does not mean it must be hocus pocus. Finally, your arguments would be more compelling if you could spell fever correctly.

You can never know enough about it, which is why it remains a fertile topic of board chatting, iywaiktyw. To that end, fyi, I've engaged in it, and in fact, I will be engaging it in again today. Naked, except for my boxers, 8-10 needles, if that helps flesh out your knowledge a bit more.

best regards, as always,

P

Although your information is anecdotal, I consider it to be more reliable than a thousand articles in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Cheers and good on ya! Happy needling and all that, iykwimatindtyd.

I think he probably also has really skinny legs. Same effect.

I would rather have acupuncture performed on my eyes with knitting needles than listen to Enya.

Better than Enya, and more relaxing, but only because Enya actually fills me with a Hank-after-a-few-drinks type of rage. It's scary.
