What do you do when the pillows get wet? Do you immediately transition to tickle fights?

Home Depot, Lowe's ???

Consider refacing/new doors & hardware if the existing cabinets are solid and there are enough of them in the right places. When we fixed up the house my BIL inherited, we stripped & refinished the cabinets and then ordered really nice new cabinet doors that we stained/polyed & had a handyman install them. That was the cheapest route to fabulous looking cabinets but when my sister wanted the same thing for her own kitchen, she hired someone to reface them & put on new doors.

For both the inherited house & sister's kitchen, new laminate countertops & new sinks were ordered from Home Depot.

Family who are consummate bargain-hunters recently did something similar, also with Home Depot, I believe. Dark wood, custom-made cabinets refaced and painted white. Because of the whacky custom aspects (built by previous owners), there are still some minor drawer issues but generally looks great. They also got new counter tops that's the stone-looking Corian (or whatever it's called). Nice look and not radioactive like the Chinese marble apparently installed in many homes.

ETA They have a fairly new fridge already and just bought a new dishwasher with state bailout appliance program that gives buyers back $250.

Here is what we did for $28k for a small kitchen:
  • New Kraftmaid cabinets from Home Depot (okay cabinets, but not great - they did have the sliding/quiet sliding shelves);
  • New granite countertops;
  • Added an island with plumbing;
  • All new stainless steel appliances (not high end);
  • Refinished hardwood floors;
  • Had a built-in shelving unit and a pantry installed;
  • New sink/faucet for regular sink and island sink

I should add that we had quite a bit of demo as well since there was a bathroom in the middle of the kitchen (don't ask).

I don't really care about your personal taste. In fact, I figured you would have seen my response and sat back and thought, "It's kinda weird that I was posting my top ten (or nine) and they were all super white." But the next time we all talk beauty standards on the board, this will come in handy. And not in a Wonk-only-likes-white-girls kinda way. More like: You can understand what I mean when I talk about what the unspoken beauty standard (skin color, bone structure, build, lips, nose, etc.) is in this country. KnowhatImean?

It's a feature. Even better than induction cooking.

Are you saying that Wonk should change his preferences in order to promote diversity? We like what we like, right? Why is it weird that he likes a certain look?

so far it looks like switching out Granderson for Jackson (of course there was more that went) was positive for us- but our sportscasters are playing like the final verdict is in. lots of guys hit well there first few months until pitchers sort them out. Jackson still hitting in September then it's time to attaboy the tigers- like a few years ago we had this big red head rookie first baseman. the guy's first few months he killed all pitching. I think he was AL player of the week a few times. we had our firstbaseman for the next decade!

then pitchers firgured out what he couldn't hit. By August he was playing in toledo. I haven't heard of him since. can't the sportscasters be expected to know this shit?

I think they get as excited as the rest of us. I tend to think that most sportscasters are fans who actually get to work in sports. They like to think they're real journalists, but we all know it's bullshit. At least the Sports Guy is honest in his approach.

Did the installer get confused by the instructions to disconnect the latch hasp from the auxiliary drainage line?

Did you get to demo yourselves? That's my favorite part of home improvement shows.

I hired a contractor so I didn't have to learn these terms.

Some of it. We had to be careful because we were keeping the bathroom plumbing so we could use it in the island.

Our contractor was great. Not quite as good as Mike Holmes, but close.

So, TM *was* commenting on the age of your choices? How, that they were too OLD?

It's like you didn't even read what I just wrote.

I don't care about his personal preferences. Or, as you say, people like what they like (although I tend to think people are programmed to like certain things almost as much as ads reflect what people like, but that's a whole 'nother topic).

I think Wonk just listed women he finds attractive off the top of his head. If I was asking him and if he didn't just post something quickly, he would probably have included some women of color. My point is that we all know Wonk isn't racist and that he probably finds many asian, black and hispanic women very, very attractive. But I think it supports what I tend to argue when we have these types of arguments (i.e., the last one I had with Sebby) about what features in this country tend to be considered baseline beautiful or desirable.

I didn't say it was weird that he likes a certain look. I believe this is common. I don't understand it, but that's because I have very different tastes and love variety.
