I like the White Stripe (and Racontuers for that matter), but isn't it a bit early to label Jack White a "rock legend," in particular when grouping him with Jimmy Page? Heck, one could question whether The Edge can be labelled a "rock legend" when grouped with Page.

Okay, what 2 rock guitarists, one of whom is at least 15 years younger than Page, and the other aboutt 30 years younger than Page, can be labelled a "rock legend" when grouped with Page? The movie pretty evidently was trying to get some generational variety.

I think Jack White is very similar to Jimmy Page in his exploration of the instrument. He goes all over the fucking place, and he's very, very good in each iteration. He also is pretty popular with the music dorks, the critics, and the general rock-listening population. That's a hard thing to pull off.

It's obvious that they took three guitarists from different eras. Who else over the last 15 years or so do you think even comes close to qualifying?

From the NYTimes review, it looked excellent. And the movie appears to give Jimmy Page the adulation he deserves.

Until you posted that link, I had no idea who or what Ed Hardy was. I assumed it was Canadian thing that only they knew about and anyone in the real America who knew what it was hated it, but most of us were blissfully unaware of. Like poutine.

You suck, Flower.

No one. The alternative would've been to shoot for 3 legends at a similar level -- say Page, Clapton, and Santana -- but that would have been a very different movie. I think the choices were excellent. The similarities you note between Page and White are interesting, and Edge is a good, contrasting middle-person.

My boyfriend is a former roadie. He held the guitar that made Houses of the Holy during a Page and Plant show. He set up the White Stripes at SXSW (having to borrow everything but the guitar from other bands) in a tiny tiny room in 2000. And he worked a U2 stadium show in the late 90s. He said that the reason you never hear any U2 covers from albums after Unforgettable Fire is that crappy cover bands can't afford all the equipment. The Edge has a full board in front of him, and there's a roadie off stage working an effects board too. Catastrophic tech failure at a U2 concert. I like the juxtaposition, because it's a totally different style and approach to the insturment than the, er, straightforward(?) way of Page and White. Looks like a pretty awesome movie.

I love that I'm almost totally out of it. Not with it at all. I've heard of this "Ed Hardy" before, but only via posts on textsfromlastnight.com, which refer to it as "douchy". I have no idea what these clothes look like.

I miss the International Male.

I don't dispute the choice. I was questioning the label.

I liked that they picked the three from different eras and it did not matter so much who they were. I saw a long interview with the filmmaker and it looks amazing.

Guitar-driven rock is just not my thing, but I admit a new appreciation for the Edge as a result of the footage.

So I think Hank's usage is correct. The man, knowing he is about to break up with his crazy e-mailing girlfriend and that there might be a long desert trek before the next girfriend, spends a week filling his hump, so to speak.

No.

You are wrong.

As is Hank.

Paigow mentioned a scenario where her boyfriend or whatever took forever to come during oral and wondered why in a post to these boards years ago.

I coined the term "blowjob camel" to describe the man. She deserves credit and blame for many, many things, but not this one.

It's her story. It's my word.

If the search function was enabled, a cite could easily be provided. In the alternative, we should get some interns and have them do it. Maybe this guy should be our new intern.

The problem with some of these names (like Vai), I think, is that they weren't with any one band for decades, as was the Edge, so while they may have a distinctive guitar sound (and prodigious talent) they didn't push a distinctive band sound.

Van Halen's an exception, but putting van Halen with Jimmy Page would go against one of the themes of the movie, as I understood it -- the idea of the second person having a very different sound than Page/Zep.

At the end of the day, I'd probably rather watch How the West Was Won again, but I'd still like to see this movie.

Talent, esp. wanky talent, ain't everything. With the possible exception of Morello, no way I'd see the movie with any of those guys filling in for the Edge.

Now Peter fucking Buck? That would be a different story.

An Ethnic Fashion Question

A few weeks ago, I went on a cocktail dress buying binge because, well, why not.

My favorite is a fabulous little dress with a unique pattern woven into the fabric. The pattern signifies a certain country's culture. The boyfriend is the same general ethnicity, but a different ancestral country.

Am I an asshole if I wear it to a gala with him?*

*The issue is not him. He would enjoy it for the kitsch factor alone, but then he's an exile from tcotu and has a sense of humor regarding such things.
