Look, you cannot have not noticed that occasionally (like, 20 times a day) people get flamed on this board. People particularly get flamed for taking two different positions on the same topic (e.g., Jamaica is for proles; Jamaica is a wonderful place for PLUs to vacation), especially within a couple days.

All I was saying is, it seems that you can dish it out but can't take it ("no one is fat because of allergies; it's all because they're too dumb/weak/pathetic to increase their activity or decrease the amount of food they eat;" "my grandparents are incapable of not eating every bite of food on their plates because of how they were brought up/their life experiences;" "waaaaah, don't insult my grandparents you heinous bitch!!!!!!!!!! die die die!!!!!!!!!!"). I was suggesting, with the switch board comments, that if you can't handle the heat, stay out of the kitchen. [Insert additional on point cliches].

It obviously wasn't really personal -- I have no fucking clue if your grandparents are fat or Lara Flynn Boyle-esque, nor do I care.

I was at Pride this weekend videotaping the crazy man screaming ABOMINATION at the top of his lungs, whilst a reverend performed a committment ceremony for 15 gay couples. And I am thinking upon reading this, why wasn't he screaming ABOMINATION at this freak show of a marriage between a gay man and a lord knows what she is.

I mean come on. What a joke. Talk about an insult to the institution.

Of course, filming the arrests made my day, but we can leave that for another conversation (and another board.)

I'm thinking I'm pretty safe if I avoid marrying Liza Minelli, Elizabeth Taylor, or J-Lo. I'm guessing you have a much better chance if you marry someone other than David Gest.

It is the unhealthy co-dependent business relationship of a worn-out alky celebrity queen and a pretentious, skanky business queen that fosters and strengthens the wonderous sacrament of marriage. To allow this tradition to be cheapened by people who truly love one another would be unacceptable.

Gawd told me so.

Does he include oral sex or is he just focused on the anal?

I did notice ever since I crossed swords with these guys at a trial they have made it a point to attack lesbians more. We're going to hell, "God should put a fear in your heart young lady."

Actually, I find it a bit scary, so I have no trouble being serious. The fact they actually know my name now doesn't thrill me. The only time I can find them amusing is when there is a fence between us and/or police officers surrounding me, as I had Saturday.

Let me preface this comment by saying that I think Pride Days/Weekends are a great thing, and that without the organizers who've been running them for 15 years, this continent would be a far less tolerant place, and we probably wouldn't get quality programming like Queer Eye (I'm now TiVo caught up, and I couldn't be happier).

But what's the deal with every city having Pride Day on a different weekend. It feels like a bit of a cheat to me. Is it the same 100,000 people going from city to city all summer long? I'd be much more impressed if they all happened on the same day. Is there a hardcore batch of Pride Day-ites? Is each city's Pride Day comprised mostly of locals, or ringers? Not that any of this matters, but it's just something that crossed my mind this summer.

I quite liked the bit where the protagonist initiates a "hey let's make photocopies of our dicks and have the women guess whose belongs to whom" contest, then uses the "enlarge" feature on the photocopier, in order to bag the (very confused) size-queen babe. But yes, a disturbing book. Having the tapeworm narrate big bits is an interesting choice.

You know those people. Always coming here from out of town and making trouble. After all, good folks raised in these parts wouldn't do those things, dress that way, or say such things.

No, you don't get too much cross over in terms of attendees, though for some of the bigger ones you might. Each event is planned and attended by locals for the most part. There isn't one big pride organizing company or anything.

Of course San Francisco and NY are attended by people from all over the world, as are some of the other big ones. In Harrisburg we tend to get about 5000-7000 people. (And about 20 protestors.) We do get some people from out of town, but not too many. Most are from Central PA.

Most places have them in June or July but some have them in other months as well. Generally the month of pride is considered to be June because that is when the Stonewall riots happened. But people have events in other months due to convenience and ability to obtain the venue, as well as weather issues. The smaller ones near each other also frequently need to share vendors in order to be financially viable, if we all had them on the same day, the vendors would have to choose which events to attend and we would probably just have a couple of local folks instead of people from around the country. The vendors do frequently do travel from event to event, at least in a certain geographical area. Also, we have to book entertainment, so a lot depends on their availability as well.

Forget SpikeTV

Made a great discovery flipping channels over the weekend while the monsoon season descended on Chicago...

Has anyone heard of Trio, the pop culture cable network?? It's pretty far up in the high numbers on my cable box, but their programming blows Spike TV away...

Yesterday, they ran a marathon of the "Battle of the Network Stars" from 1976 - 1980... Absolutely hilarious. Bad disco-era hair and fashions, watching David Letterman swim the anchor leg in the swimming relay and clips from "new" shows like Battlestar Galactica. Besides seeing established stars, half the fun is seeing C-list celebrities representing their network for a show that was either already cancelled or I never heard of. Hosted by Howard Cosell. Great stuff.

The network also runs early Letterman episodes, a show called "Good Clean Porn" which is, as the name implies, censored actual porn movies with surprisingly high unintentional comedy levels and reruns of "My Mother the Car"...

I have always wondered the same thing about Bob Hope concerts. I mean, there aren't really millions of hairless militaristic 18 to 20 year olds without any musical taste or a sense of humor out there, are there? Doesn't the army just shuttle them around from place to place?

Has anyone ever wondered why the military is mostly black but the Bob Hope audiences are mostly white?

I saw the first episode stone sober. Parts of it were funny. Many of the cast members were writers/actors on MTV's The State, and the humor is very similar. I'm not sure what kind of legs a "Cops" parody can have in 2003. But I dearly love mockumentaries, so I'll watch it while it's on.

The part where they're sitting around the break room discussing which of them is "allowed" to use the n-word was pretty funny. "He can say it, but you can't." "He can say it, but not about me." "How about if I say it but don't know who it's about, like, 'Which nigger took the last donut?'" "No, you can't say it that way." I'm absolutely positive this exact conversation gets played out in break rooms throughout America every day.

Looking forward to seeing that. Wilco is one of my favorite Midwestern bands and fortunately we get a lot of opportunities to see them live here. Also saw Jeff Tweedy's prior band, the pioneering alt-country group Uncle Tupelo a couple of times in my college days...

On another homer note, YHF's enhanced CD features some great Chicago photos, and of course the corn-cob looking towers of Marina City are on the cover...

Speaking of the FB music club, thank you to all who recommended Fountains of Wayne's "Welcome Interstate Managers." Liking it.

Also on an FB rec, I bought The Flaming Lips. However, because I was in a Target in West Covina at the time and therefore completely disoriented, I bought "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" when I think I was supposed to get "Transmissions from the Satellite Heart." Right? 'Cause a robot invasion concept album isn't really making me shake my moneymaker.

I'm supposed to get the New Pornographers, I know, but the whole Flaming Lips debacle has me gunshy. Should I get "Electric Version" or "Mass Romantic"?

Finally, I'm planning to get "True Love Waits" for my parents. I won't tell them it's Radiohead (not that they'd know what it was anyway). I'm sick to fucking death of listening to Windham Hill when we're at their house for dinner.

Just listened to it last evening on my rather sweaty (very high humidity) but nice run. Ashes of American Flag is my favorite song.

Has anyone listened to the second Mermaid Ave disc and is it any good?

Edited to add that Wilco uses a lot of those cool Chicago building shots in concert too.

Can't go wrong with either New Pornographers disc. Electric Version is probably a little easier to find in your average chain store right now. While they are a bit offbeat lyrically, they are not nearly as weird as Flaming Lips.

As for Fountains of Wayne, that CD is also in heavy rotation for me right now. Great driving music. One of the best odes to a MILF you'll ever hear.

I empathize. My parents have ruined Diana Krall and Santana's Greatest Hits for me. The latter has been played since as long as I can remember. Its like my dad's token nod to coolness.

I do thank them for introudcing me to pre Sat Night Fever Bee Gees and Neil Diamond. And my mom for buying Tattoo You, which I stole from her. My dad actually kinda raised his voice at her for buying that album. Oh, but Santana is ok. Parents. Jeez.
