Explosion

Anyone thinking of going to Crocker Galleria for lunch, please change your plans.

Firefighters and police evacuated several blocks around the Ralph Lauren clothing store in the Crocker Galleria area, said fire spokesman Peter Howes. The incident happened at Post and Kearny. NBC11 has confirmed that an electrical transformer that exploded under the street caused the blast.

NBC11 News reporter Cheryl Hurd is at the scene and says police have brought in bomb-sniffing dogs as a precaution.

Tom Demartini, a construction worker who was sitting in his truck outside the store, said he heard the explosion and saw the sidewalk rise up six or seven inches.

"It sounded like a big 'poof,' then there was a lot of smoke," Demartini said. "One woman looked like she was badly burned."

The explosion seemed to come from underground, he said.

Mariana Hernandez from PG&E told NBC11 News via phone that the blast could likely be from an electrical issue under the road.

Several witnesses have been calling NBC11 News to report they heard and felt the explosion and thought it may havbe been an earthquake.

Scores of police officers and firefighters closed off the area and shut down several blocks as evacuated office workers milled about in the aftermath.

It was cool. The lights went out. Then there were sirens. And then I had to go to a stupid meeting.

The sirens have not stopped and now there are helicopters. Why is ATF involved?

The helicopters are gone. But the sirens remain.

P. I've got the 200K thing. Being jealous of your "wins" would be like Roger Clemens getting wistful about the guy who won the Toledo Mudhens/ Lansing Lugnuts game last night. I mean we're competiting in the same game maybe, but we're at VERY different levels.

If you want to really sightsee on the way, be in the passenger seat as it does get a bit hairy at times. Would not recommend that road at night or in bad weather. From Carmel down past Hearst there's not much in the way of facilities, or anything else for that matter.

Also, back from Napa. Had a good time and got to probably 10-12 wineries. Sent a couple cases worth of various things we tried home. Stayed at a great B&B. Sad to say V. Rattui was still drawing a crowd as far as I could tell from the Dean & DeLuca across the highway.
So if I were leaving, say, today, because the event I have been waiting for for fucking forever finally took place and I am celebrating and also just want to get the fuck out of Dodge, it appears I could drive up to wherever Hearst Castle is (yes, I will get a map). If we can take it as a given that I like big old houses (e.g., loved Biltmore and all those Rhode Island houses), would I want to spend most of a day (tomorrow) at HC? There appear to be several different tours, each of which is about an hour and a half.

I have not done the castle, so maybe someone who has can chime in, but if you're going right by it, you could stop in San Luis Obispo - it's kind of a cute little town. Or hit the wineries in Los Olivos - it's also a cute little town.

Never been to Hearst Castle, but I understand that you could probably happily spend a long time there.

Incidently, I've always wanted to stay at the Madonna Inn. I can't decide which room I want, though.

HC has (I think) four different tours. Most people pick the tour of the main house, but you can do more than one in a day. The point of the place is not only big old house, but the fact that W.R. Hearst pillaged Europe of many of its great art and architectural treasures when it was in chaos. So it's kind of like a cheesy "Greatest Hits" compilation that you're not proud to own but you're not afraid to slip into the CD player when no one else is listening.

Assuming this gets to you in time.

ETA: Five tours, but one is a Night Tour.

Hey SF-ers:

Go see Jackpot at cafe du nord on Saturday. You won't regret it. Unless Rusty gets too drunk. Or doesn't get drunk enough. But it's worth the risk. When they're on, these guys are as good as it gets.

7 Seconds frontman Kevin Seconds is also on the bill, presumably doing his singer-songwriter schtick (which I also like).

Really. Go. And report back.
