Is this true?

If you're offering to get tatooed for me, no thanks, already taken.

I see your point.

But it is what makes bike races boring to watch. I hate seeing the guy who sprints out solo get caught by the peloton a few minutes later. No reward for taking the risk. As far as I'm concerned, those risks should be encouraged, not discouraged, at least from a fan standpoint (b/c it's fun to watch when it happens).

Well, the dynamics of the breakaway are far different in the big stage races (the tours) then they are in crits or even the one day classics. And generally, the only ways to effectively break away are if 1) the peloton does not care about you, or 2) the peloton makes a mistake. But in a race like the Tour, how could you maintain a no drafting rule? The race starts out and everybody sprints for the first mile or so, and then each rider has to drop back ten feet from the rider in front of him?

Thanks for confirming that there is something more boring than just watching bike racing.

And I saw the very end of the Tour de France this year. It was 30 minutes of stand in oppressive crowd, inhale smog from motorcade, snap your neck from left to right repeatedly to watch the colors whiz by, repeat.

I love bike racing and have watched races in person here and in France. There are multiple races inside each race and the strategies and tactics are fascinating. If you're in the right spot, for the right event, there is a lot to see. I prefer time trials and the final stage from the perfect spot where you can watch attacks form.

Hopping off your post:

Do they have long tour-like bike races where drafting is not allowed? Or where there are no teams? This is probably a question for PLF.

Time trials and track racing.

eta: Obviously events and not tour-like, but the fact is there's no reason to do a multi-stage non-team event since bike-racing at its core is a team event.

eta: Yes, please do google that for me.

A girl came in 30th in Leadville last weekend with a time of 8:14:53. She was an hour and forty five minutes or so behind Lance, but the closest guy to Lance was almost a half-hour behind. I don't think that Lance should be the benchmark for "can they compete".

(I haven't seen my trainer yet to ask about it. He finished 90th at 8:47:27, but he's currently suffering from a bruised liver and hasn't been back to the gym since he got back from Colorado. I assume he crashed at some point and landed terribly wrong.)

By "can they compete" I meant "are they allowed to," not "can they keep up." Apparently the answer to the question I meant was yes.

And yeah, I agree that keeping up with Lance isn't the standard.

Great opening line to the article:

"A man with a tattoo of Britney Spears' name on his arm or neck allegedly stole a Chihuahua with pink earrings from a South Florida gay bar. "

A journalist waits his whole life to write a line like that.

Sure, but why did he feel it necessary to call out that it was a gay bar?

You didn't post about the three apologies by the author (the first disappeared from her website shortly after it was published, the second is here and the third is here) and the fourth apology by the Times.

I don't know that I would like Cintra Wilson if I met her, but her writing has always pulled me in.

Frankly, people, I think this has all gotten a bit ridiculous.

You know I didn't mean it that way, so please remove the knot from your panties and when you're ready, join me for a cigarette and several Pucker martinis at the insouciant end of the pool, and I'll tell you all about the time I inadvertently alienated my best friend for a year when I wrote an article about her wedding.

Have you ever played a sport?

Female athletes are programmed to believe they cannot compete with men. One of the many reasons why they believe this is the fact that there are different leagues and sports for boys and girls and men and women. If you don't think that watching a woman compete against and beat 1/3 or 1/2 of the greatest male golfers in the world would be empowering* to female athletes and their supporters, then we have come to the point in the conversation where I have to conclude that you don't know shit about sports.

TM

*And you should watch the interviews of the men who played with Michelle Wie after she consistently beat the hell out of them off the tee.

Given that I already preface my very few posts about sports with the disclaimer that I don't follow any of them, this is curiously antagonistic. We both vouch for your greater knowledge of sports, and the last organized league I played in was a shitty city rec softball league at my old firm -- but this seems like we're both just guessing about the psychological effects on 13 year old aspiring female athletes, and I do not concede your greater insight into that.

I suspect that some male-on-female competitions will always smack of gimmickry.

So I'm willing to let each sport decide whether to let women compete in the men's division. I just don't think it's a one-size-fits-all solution, because the impact on the women's division will be more or less dire depending on the nature of the sport. It makes no sense that Olympic shooting is not all open events, but it does make sense to me that biathlon is, and it doesn't seem like a must-be-corrected form of sexism for there to be a difference.

This is a tricky area for feminists because it is one where there are very marked differences between men and women, and they can't be argued away as social conditioning. Men, generally, are physicially faster and stronger than women, and segregation makes sense in order to NOT exclude exceptional female athletes from recognition in their sports. There are exceptions, of course, and maybe golf is one of them. (See, Salon's Broadsheet for a further discussion on this.)
