I'll preface this by saying I've never been to Texas, but I was told by a person who travelled to the Houston area that they paint the tunnels green to simulate plant-life. Is that part of the recreation effort of which you speak?

The walls aren't painted green - that's mould. Mould is plant life.

And I prefer my recreation outside of the tunnel.

People spend money on dumber shit than that (homerun baseballs, ugly art). I am now feeling distinctly low-rent for being too cheap to cough up the extra 20 bucks for the special earphones with the controls on the earphone wire for my Walkman.

As an added bonus, I am so happy at home with my tech toys that I generally don't feel the need to go out and spend money on other things -- for example, before I got my huge screen I went to more baseball games and now, although I still go to a fair number, I am happy to sit home and stare at my boys of summer larger than life with theatre sound and not get robbed for a beer. The service departments will be packed with people with dead computers, TV's and stereos from the surge - all which could have been avoided with a $100 (NOT $10) surge protector. Four points:

One, your silly agression and erroneous Timmification suggests that you tie a lot of your self-worth up in your possessions and knowledge about them. Have you though about trying to better your life in ways that can't be summed up in a page on some home theater website?

Two, When you're talking about how someone is going to "invest in the electronics," you surely are not talking about an "investment." Is that what you're saying? Because, if that's what you're saying, I don't really need to respond to that.

Third, I'm not arguing that there is not a difference or misunderstanding your simple point that there is. I was making a different point, which you seemed to miss in your desire to lash out at me for what you perceived to be a personal attack. I'm simply arguing that most people don't think that additional quality is worth all that extra money, and that a lot of people who are into home theater and premium sound don't get that some people choose to spend their money on other things, even though it might mean that their systems don't sound as good. I do know how fantastic high-end stuff sounds; I just have better ways to spend $50k or so.

Four, since this is all in good fun, I will only bite you if you moan a lot and talk about my "amp" and your "receiver."

That's lovely third hand knowledge of a place.

I am not a native Texan. I was here before the boom and I am here after the bust, so I think that makes me a Texan and not one of those Californians who have now returned from whence they came.

Houston is a lovely city, with big beautiful parks, world-class museums, outstanding restaurants. It's cosmopolitan and the people are friendly. What more could you want in a big city?

Well, that whole law of diminishing returns thing is sort of like the conservation of energy one. At some point, shortly after you find yourself wishing that the backup guitarist had purchased higher-quality strings, and would put that damn sound-absorbing paperback book behind his stool, you realize that a chain is only as good as the weakest link.

A lot of people forget that Houston is where the gulf coast of the southeast meets the prairies of the northwest meets the piney woods of the northeast meets the wetlands of the southwest. It's flat, but it's generally green, and there are lots of trees.
