I think they ought to put a question on the AP exam saying: "choose another country for comparison purposes, and identify ways in which that country and the US might each claim to be "exceptional" and ways in which they might not." Just so we can watch the heads explode.

I chafe a little bit at the description of a hypothetical voter who doesn’t want gays teaching in the public schools AND wants to tax the ever-living shit out of rich people as “ideologically inconsistent.” The person has two ideologies, neither of which has anything to do with the other except that a university academic doesn’t think they should exist in the same person, possibly just because he’s never met a person who holds both positions.

At this point I’m just happy to meet someone capable of formulating an “except when” statement when spouting off about policy. Doesn’t matter to me if he accepts my friendly amendments; he’s already been moderated as far as I’m concerned.

I blame the lack of exceptions offered on three things:

1. Our "zero tolerance" society, where all strictures are absolutes;
2. Our rat-like attention spans, through which any aside or equivocation requires the listener to consider something in greater depth than his executive-summary-with-bullet-points addicted mind can handle;
3. A stupid belief that the shorter and more decisive we are, the stronger and smarter we'll seem ("W was a leader... This Obama guy thinks too much." or "That bald guy on Shark Tank talks in short bursts, and he's a serious fucking baller, yo!")
