Have you read "The Power Broker"? It's about Robert Moses who was a major force behind much of the bridge/highway/tunnel/park development in NY in the 30s 40s and 50s. Other people who know way more about NY can probably expand on that. I read it quite a while ago, but remember it being good. I think he's pretty controversial; not sure if the book was slanted one way or the other, or was attempting to be even-handed. It's from back in 1975 but it's history . . .

Thought you might be interested. Perhaps you could use the lawtalkers amazon link to purchase!
Thx. I'll look into that. Could always use a good read. And amazon has been my best friend lately (esp. after Leagl explained the link q's I had to me). Bought Al Franken yesterday. And Sesame Street. YAY!*

Props to Coldplay for being the only performers (that I noticed) that acknowledged the person who actually made the video. Was Beyonce singing? It did not look that way to me. I'm not sure her choreography allows it.

MTV2 Award? What the hell is that? It looked like it may have been an award for an actual video, given the nominees.

And I agree with not gay, anttwat that the Madonna/Britney kiss looked forced. When I look at the still photo, it looks pretty hot. The memory of seeing it in action ruins it for me, though.

Edit: This is causing me to reconsider some of the spreads in my Swank collection.

I think Madonna looks pretty good for her age. When my husband first saw her Gap ad, said "God she looks old", but I disagree.
I saw Duran Duran in concert three or so years back (it was only Simon LeBon and Nick Rhodes and some other guy who'd been with the band for 10 years but no one knew because he joined after their star faded), and they were looking okish, not as bad as last night, but certainly not the heartthrobs of my pre-pubesence.

I Tivoed the last half of the show last night, and scrolled through to see their award. I felt sort of bad for them, because it was obvious that half the crowd could have cared less that they were on stage or got the award. I suspect that PLF was behind the sound not working for the video montage.

I forgot to mention that it is quite long -- one volume, but it's a fat volume. You may be able to find it secondhand as it seems to be assigned reading for public policy students sometimes (like the guy I was dating when I read it).

Edited to annoy the crap out of people and to say that of course you will buy it through Amazon but if we have any students or public service-y people on here who want to read it but don't want to spend as much as it costs, etc.

Ben Who? He doesn't do anything for Boston, so we don't care. Besides he's a bit of an embarassment talent wise. I've only seen a few of his movies, but he always plays the same kind of characters. Chuckie Sullivan in Good Will Hunting wasn't all that different from Bartleby in Dogma.

So, I'm listening to the US Open on the internet (www.usopen.org) and the host says that Tara Reid is dating Mark Phillippoussis!! Huh?! I don't care how hot he is, he just lost points for his poor taste in women.

And why Kelly Osbourne? After seeing Duran with Justin Timberlake on the after-show I think they should have allowed him to give them the award -- hell, they should have let him suck off each one of them onstage not only because he so much wanted to but because it would have allowed him to try to outdo the Britney/Madonna kiss and thus continue the Britney/J.Tim spat. What did Kelly's shirt say? "Young, willing and eager" or something like that? How about "ugly, bitchy and talentless"? I am so happy that the Ozman drugged his brain into submission years ago and doesn't have a clue about the debacle that is his daughter (his son is so freaky that it must cut through the haze..poor Ozzy). Was I the only one who caught a glimpse of the Hilton sisters in the audience? Even my know-nothing prole husband said "isn't that those Hilton girls? Whoa, they've been ridden hard and put away wet."

To those who wonder when it will be on again I would just like to point out that the first replay was at 11:30 last night immediately following the after-show. Don't worry, you will get more than one opportunity to see it....again and again and again.

edited to say that the Johnny Cash thing was obviously thrown in to drum up interest. They had no intention of giving an award to Johnny Cash. And then J.Tim saying that him winning over Cash was a travesty -- yes, it was you little freak. You would think he would have downplayed his "gangsta 'tude" after Chris Rock so clearly called him out for it.

Lengthening my post to add that I think Beyonce lipped some of it and sang some -- I think the production of songs today where they overlay the voices so much makes this necessary if the song is going to sound even remotely like what you hear on the radio. Not defending Beyonce though -- Jay-Z carried her. I kept wondering if her boobies would fall out of that gold dress she wore when accepting awards.

I'm not one of those chicks that ever swooned for him (or Damon for that matter).

I also happened to see clips of him throwing out the pitch on Entertainment Tonight, or some such, earlier this week and they were trying to spin the whole local-boy thang like anyone around Boston gives a shit. My experience in the crowd just confirmed the obvious -- no one does.

Fortunately all the cancer-survivor kids got nice rounds of applause for their pitches.

During the past couple of weeks he has been getting a lot of press for being "rediscovered," while us hipsters have been listening to cool Cash stuff like Folsom Prison Blues since like, you know, forever, or at least since he was on Columbo.

I'm a Survivor, I'm a (naa naa naa)...

Okay, That one line is all I can make out in that wretched song. Anyway, here's info on the next Survivor --

The 18 people stranded on two islands Survivor Pearl Islands won't be bringing luxury items, extra clothes, or even bathing suits. Instead, the two tribes -- named after pirates, Captain Henry Morgan and Sir Francis Drake -- will be stranded on two different islands "with only the clothes on their backs," as E! Online reports. CBS also revealed the two tribes today: The Drake tribe includes three people who are 29 years old, a "troubled teens mentor" who looks like Peter Jackson meets Hagrid, and an Eagle Scout. The Morgan tribe has its own scout, includes a 51-year-old "scout troop leader," in addition two guys named Ryan and an attorney who once represented Jerry Springer's show. The oldest survivor is 51 and the youngest is 22. The show debuts Sept. 18 with a 90-minute episode.

I guess I am just confused because if he raped her then call it rape and be done with it. Why add that it was deviate? Seems like overkill and also lets everyone know that not only do we think he raped her but we also figure he did it kinda freaky. I guess I will have to see if raping in the pooper carries a greater penalty in Pennsylvania than missionary-style rape. My Google task for the day.

No need to google.

Rape is defined as forced sexual intercourse, they add the others for specific acts that are done during the rape itself, including forced anal and oral sex.

It is just piled on top of the rape charge.

Hmm I was just in Pittsburgh the other day, I tend to stay at the Omni instead of the Westin. Now we here in PA can watch a circus of a trial too. Should be fun.

Speaking of Omnis, I was a bit startled the other day when I arrived around 10:30 at night and not only had they turned down the bed and put out the cushy bathrobe, but also, had turned the tv on, making me think I was walking into someone else's room.
