Long Good Friday is indeed a great, and underappreciated motion picture. In that vein, you might like "The Krays," a London gangster picture starring the twins from Spandau Ballet. I saw it at a film festival a long time ago and I remember enjoying it quite a bit, notwithstanding its brutality.

In today's Inadmissible Section:

F*cking Law Firms
"Greedy Associates have rebelled. After administrators of the popular Web message boards imposed new rules cracking down on the use of profanity, vulgarity, and abusive language a group of longtime users launched their own rival site, lawtalkers.com. The site went live March 28 and allows users to "curse to your heart's content" while sharing inside information about law firms and salaries,as well as general opinions on politics, sex, fashion and the like. The split with Greedy Associates, which is owned by West Publishing, wasn't so much because users couldn't bear to discuss firms without swearing. It was more a protest over how the new policies were instituted. 'To have things run a certain
way for a long time, to have no discussion of concerns - which might well have been legitimate - and to simply start filtering out this or that word is, I think problematic," e-mails Legalease - the moniker of the lawyer who put lawtalkers.com together."

You know, I completely forgot about the audience voting part.

MbA has to be the most bizarre reality tv show ever. In the past, people have accused shows from stealing ideas from each other, but I have never seen a show assemble a melange of elements so randomly and seemingly by whim from week to week.

That said, the ads make tonight's episode look very intriguing with last-second dust-ups, so I cannot wait.

I am not ashamed (although my tivo has started recording shows like "Ed" and "Dismissed" ever since I got a season's pass for MBA so maybe I should be ashamed). Jill and Kevin will win the money/car/house. I give the marriage one year, if that.

I would be shocked if Tony went through with this, but Fox is editing it so that I will be shocked if he goes through with it, so there's a good chance that he WILL go through with it b/c Fox likes to fuck with us that way.

Thanks for suggesting my namesake. Mike Hodges directed both Get Carter and Croupier. I saw Sexy Beast again over the weekend and was reminded of how good it was.

In today's political climate, praising the French is risky, but any discussion of film noir should include them. Rialto Pictures is remastering many classics for DVD and showing a few at rep houses. Le Cercle Rouge and Quai des Ofrevres are playing at rep houses now. Rififi, Pepe Le Moko, The Third Man, and Bob le Flambeur are out on DVD. The Good Thief is a remake of Bob le Flambeur with Nick Nolte in the title role.

Note: This post is not at all about sex. This post seeks medical advice, which, as we all know, people on this board are qualified to give.

I have worn gas permeable (hard) contacts since 1987 (not the same pair, but the same type) but lately my eyes have been exceedingly sore. Moreover, I cannot read road signs, I squint at my computer screen, and I cannot read the clock or channel on my T.V. I could not even tell that Ralph Fiennes had a hairlip when watching Red Dragon--I was very confused about the plot because of this until I mentioned to my companions, "Why is Ralph Fiennes complaining about his face?"

The optometrist claims that the reason my prescription does not allow me to actually see is that the lenses curve my eyes so that he cannot get a proper reading unless I don't wear the contacts for two weeks prior to the appointment. I would gladly do this, except my glasses prescription is even more archaic and I can't drive, read, or even exist without getting an extreme headache if I try to wear them. I think I want to try soft contacts. Has anyone here gone from gas permeable to soft lenses? As I recall, back in the day gas permeable were my only option due to my astigmatism and the football shape of my eyes (as opposed to spherical).

Your optometrist is probably right about you needing to stop wearing your contacts so he can get a good reading. I have disposable extended wear contacts and had been wearing them pretty much 24/7, with one night off a week. The opthalmalogist told me he couldn't get a good read because my contacts had molded my corneas to their shape and I had to cut way back on wearing them for 2 months before I could get a new prescription.

You'll probably need to get new glasses, getting as close as possible to a good prescription, then wear them until you can get re-fitted for contacts.

I also wear gas permeable lenses and have astigmatism. I've heard that the lenses do change the shape of your eyes but have never heard that as an excuse for problems getting to the proper fitting. This seems fishy to me. FWIW, I've been talked out of switching to soft lenses in the past because your vision will not be as sharp and soft lenses actually deprive your eyes of oxygen and gradually kills your corneas.

The remake has to be a joke. If it isn't, then I really hope they do it so they can finally kill both of their careers completely and then we will no longer be subjected to their "acting."

Assuming it must be done, you would have to find actors who could carry off the combination of smoldering sex appeal and emotional reserve -- while being excellent actors.

Plus, they need to have a little bit of age and experience or else the story doesn't make sense.

For the male role, I am feeling Viggo Mortensen. Or maybe Jude Law, Linus Roache, Kenneth Branagh, Russell Crowe, or Mel Gibson.

For the female role, how about Diane Lane, Jennifer Connelly, Gwynneth could certainly pull of the emotional reserve, for Americans. Or, Sophie Marceau might be good.
