Personally, I'm not into either lifestyle, particularly knowing that the second one seems to involve housework, yard work, and child care -- in addition to an outside job. And all to the point of exhaustion. While some other adult sits around not helping until sex is used as a motivation.

Actually, the book to which I linked is supposed to explain how the moisture problems can be addressed so that straw bale can be used in any climate.

Your post reminds me of a funny documentary I saw on HBO last spring called Blue Vinyl. (I seem to remember it's being discussed on the board?)

Here's a link: http://www.bluevinyl.org/animation.htm

The filmmaker's parents decided to cover their wood house in blue vinyl siding and she, having survived cancer caused by DES, goes on a quest to discover all that is wrong with vinyl. Ultimately she convinces her parents to remove it by overwhelming them with the evidence of vinyl's toxicity in every stage -- manufacturing, installation, disposal, and, heaven forbid, a fire. The scene where she visited with factory workers in Italy who lost their voiceboxes to cancer did it for me.

It's an enjoyable film because the filmmaker has a great sense of humor and appreciation for the absurd, and her interactions with her parents are very amusing.

I have a fear of flying, that is not so unusual. I do, however, travel by car, train (I love trains up the coast) and occasionally boat (but I gotta know where the lifeboats are). I admit that I work a lot and that does interfere with travel opportunities as does having a child in school and no family in the area to watch him while we vacation (area? hell, the closest relative is almost 1,000 miles away) and I am not comfortable leaving him for a week with a non-relative. I don't eat eggwhites -- I just did a few times when I was a child. I like pizza. And nachos. Salad. And really sharp white cheddar cheese. The human body is a beautiful thing, clothed or naked. I think the naked body can be showcased in many artistic manners. Using the naked human body for shock value (is flesh necessary in every damn movie?) just doesn't appeal to me. I did not view the Breasticle Day photos in large part because I did not provide a photo of myself and thus felt that it was taking advantage, so to speak. An aversion to having things in my ass does not equate to an aversion to sexual experimentation. I have tried many, many, many things -- I kept what appealed to me and tossed what did not. You see, I am old enough to have "been there, done that" and discovered what I like and I stick to that -- I don't feel a need go back and retry things that I don't like. Fuck you.

Why should vegan clothing mimic non-vegan clothing? You can get materials a lot better looking than fake leather that will serve the same purposes (and probably serve them better), and once you stop to think "well, why should a vegan foul-weather boot look like a leather boot? Why not create something entirely different with waxed cotton, or jointed wood or metal soles, or something else that makes the most of materials we are willing to use?" the whole world opens up.

BR(Because people are conformist sheep, yes, I know.)
We should start a company to design "attractive" vegan clothing. Maybe we could get some hollywood types to model to get us going. Vegan doesn't have to be frumpy. That said, a lot of vegans do like to look frumpy - it's that earth mother thing. But for the vegan lawyers, what else you going to wear to court? BRC and NFH's hot vegan clothing store. We could call it Hot Topics - or has that been done? I have a friend who, while in search of golf clothing for a company tournament, lamented that golf clothing for women (even for men) is hideous. Even the most expensive stuff is not very flattering. We're going to design attractive golf clothing for women. Or maybe I'm just trying to appeal to the wrong people - vegans and golfers - maybe they want to look dowdy.

Interesting. I never knew I was on your ignore list, but it explains a lot. More than anything, I'm amused by your utter cowardice and lack of character.

It takes a special kind of sociopathic personality...like yours... to put someone on an "ignore" list and then send them vituperative PMs, which you know you'll never "see" the responses to. Before now, I didn't understand what was going on. It doesn't take any guts to flame people when you don't have to deal with the fallout. Current public potshots aside, your behavior is pathetic.

And as for getting some, I've somehow managed to get married and reproduce, unlike a certain burrito-butt bitch with a coke habit, a woefully-underpaid therapist, and a vibrator named "Chad." At the rate you're going, you won't be able to afford a sperm bank when you hit 40.

Great. My house has vinyl siding, though it was there when I bought it. I figured that it was better than wood because I wouldn't have to repaint it every five years or so. Sheesh, even if I get rid of it, it will still cause problems...

Well, you really have to choose your battles. Vegan friend was reaching for a piece of fruit one day and her father said, "you're not going to eat that are you?" She said, "yeah, why not." He said, "well most fruits and vegetables are picked by non-union labor so you can't in good consciousness eat that." That's when the screaming match began and the "choose your battles" line was drawn. You can't fight every battle.

I recall an ad in a college newspaper by the Sultan of Brunei, seeking 20 young, attractive wellspoken female students to act as "hostesses" at his parties during a 2 week tour of the country. Despite the assurances that this was a "decent" proposal and the attractive college women were just expected to wear an evening gown, socialize with his guests and make intelligent conversation, the $80,000 pricetag for the 2 weeks work seemed to imply otherwise.

To this day I regret that I didn't meet the height requirement.

That reminds me, a friend of mine is about 10 weeks pregnant, and I went out to eat with her maybe a week or so ago. When we were making plans, she sort of hopefully suggested that we go to a local mediterranean style buffet, and I had no problem with that. After her third trip back to the line, she confessed that ever since she got pregnant, she can't stop eating tobouleh, and I realized that pretty much every plate that came back was all tobouleh. I assured her that I didn't think worse of her for having a tobouleh problem, and she went back again.

Anyhow, I thought it was an interesting thing to get a craving for (and actually rather healthy too), and I figured it could be a good poll. What's the most interesting thing you've seen pregnant women crave?

Most winters I've spent here, you're right, it's only really cold (by which I mean highs below freezing) 5-6 days each winter, if that. Last winter was a major bitch, though, and this winter is supposed to be the same. For a few years I've had this very silly early 1970s fur coat I'd picked up on a lark for $8 at a garage sale, and I never really had an urge to wear it, but I was SO GRATEFUL I had that thing last winter. I looked stupid, but I was WARM. I fully expect to look stupid this winter as well, but am considering getting a stupid hat to match.

Now, where I grew up we had real winter. (You kids, you don't know how lucky you've got it. Now when I was your age ...) Not quite Minneapolis winter, but every year a few people froze to death going to the corner for milk. If I were back there now I'd get a full length fur coat in a second (actually, probably a full length fur lined coat, or a long swing-cut shearling thing). I've never heard of anyone having trouble with PETA there, largely because when it gets cold, it is too cold for anyone to want to go out in anything OTHER than fur so the PETA folk stay inside.

Pool supply stores sell nice transparent-front cabinets that provide a secure and weatherproof environment for your TV, with hook-ups to outside amps and speakers so you can actually hear the thing.

My father is in the former group. We usually avoid talking politics when we all get together, for obvious reasons, but sometimes it just slips out.

One of my cousins (in the other faction) has decided to work up a family website, which is cool. At the top of the home page, he's inserted a graphic of a flapping American flag.

My father is bent out of shape about this. He sees it as an attempt by my cousin to make a political point.

I'm not so sure. I'm not as sure as my dad that the cousin sees the flag in a divisive way, and thinks it's possible that he sees it as something we all share. Said cousin actually lives in a suburb of Seattle, so he should be more attuned to these things than someone who lives in, e.g., a rural area in the Mountain Time Zone uninhabited by liberals, but I just don't know. And I think raising this could be awkward.
