They finished second in a qualifying group that included South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Iran and the UAE. People might have expected Iran to do better.

It is so sad that you must defend yourself by emphasizing your own lack of achievement. Not the boss of IT indeed.

Keep working. We have faith in you.

Iran was in the middle of a revolution during qualifiers, and imploded with an own goal against South Korea. North Korea only needed to tie Saudi Arabia to get in.

You say that like North Korea has no problems of its own.

What I wonder is whether the North Korean players realize that the teams they are playing against are actually from other countries, or whether they think these are simply additional minions of the Glorious Leader.

I would guess that the members of the North Korean national soccer team don't fully share in the problems of their countrymen.

And that Dear Leader has instituted an exceptionally strong disincentive towards own-goals.

Why does The Hobbit have to be 2 movies? They managed to do each book of LOTR in one movie.

I imagine it's because $700,000,000>$350,000,000. (based on approximate average of domestic revenues from the three LOTR movies on Boxofficemojo.com)

A less cynical person would say "so they can make the movies reflect the scope and depth of the book, rather than just compress the story into a series of battle, narrow escape, battle, narrow escape."

Or maybe that's more cynical. Or maybe I just need to get over the fact that Tom Bombadil was cut from the first one -- I really never recovered from that.

The great thing about slash-and-crash battle scenes in the era of CGI is that a battle scene can take four minutes or half an hour at the director's option. What the LOTR trilogy proved was that the Battle of Five Armies that took maybe six minutes of the Rankin-Bass animated version of The Hobbit* could be drawn out to a full hour (if New Line pays for it) and no one would be bored by it. But apparently there's also some plot that someone is writing to better connect TH with FOTR, which New Line will gladly sell you in a twelve-disc Director's Cut with Authentic Replica One Ring for just $179.99.

*I'm grateful for this not for the thing itself, but for its inspiration of the Lemmiwinks episode of "South Park" in what turned out to be the last consistently funny season.

One of my FB friends is a Hollywood up-and-comer whose girlfriend had a recurring role on "Veronica Mars" and who has supplied my Suggestions feed with a constant stream of headshots of easy-on-the-eyes C-listers, plus the guy who used to host "Curb Appeal" on HGTV. You should try this place:

Porchetta (pork loin and pork belly) on ciabatta with lemon and greens. REdiculously good, in a very unhealthy way.

porchetta is excellent. Also good is brasaula [dried filet?] almost less of a beef carpaccio and more sliced dried filet.

Wow. I thought he was gone for sure. The question becomes, what does this mean about Lebron's plans? Did he turn it down because (i) he got the feeling Lebron ain't comin' back, (ii) because he didn't want to wait for lebron to figure it out or (iii) did he just not want to leave MSU?

I'd go with a combo of (ii) and (iii), but I'm hoping it's (i).

I expect a press conference for anything related to Lebron, no matter how far removed.

"Lebron's second cousin once removed once enjoyed a deep dish Chicago style pizza. Press conference on whether this will influence Lebron's decision at noon."

ummm, I'm sleeping easier having heard, "I knew this was a decision for life. I'm a lifer."

that's certainly a change from this morning.

I get 6 million v. 3, but what other reason would he leave? Cleveland's sucess is a real crap shoot- even if Lebron stays- and if they did fix shit and win is that really better for him that if he wins the NCAA next year? the college coach who wins is the guy who won- the pro coach who coaches Lebron is not the guy who won anything.

and his coaching style is so not an NBA style.

Agreed, and Bobby Knight, for example, won championships a long time ago and was close to untouchable for decades. He was successful after that, but his prior success was enough to get him through a lot of crap that he wouldn't have survived in the NBA.

In other words, $3 mil a year for the next 20 years beat $6 mil for the next three years.

I think you're both nuts.

Hank: Elite coaches don't think, "Cleveland's sucess is a real crap shoot if Lebron is there and I'm coaching." They believe that they would have won multiple championships by now if they had been there earlier (which probably isn't far from the truth given the fact that Mike Brown is a fucking moron.

Adder: $3 million for the next 20 years vs $6 for the next three? Do you live in a bubble, boy? At the absolute worst, he makes $6 million for the next five years and $3 million for the 15 after that. He could come back and take the MSU job if he washed out in the NBA--hell, he could come back and take 100 NCAA coaching gigs if he washed out in the NBA. But if he's successful, it's $6+ million for the next 20 years.

All this talk has convinced me that Lebron is not coming back to Cleveland. Izzo's stated reasons for staying are the reasons why he shouldn't have been considering it seriously in the first place. But I think he thought Lebron would jump at the chance to play for him, which he did not. So why risk coaching a Lebron-less Cavs crew?

You believe anything that comes out of a D-I NCAA coach's mouth? Sure, great, he's back for next year, and maybe longer. But do you really think he's not going to continue to listen to inquiries from various teams over the next few years?

You read me like a book. I know the Knicks have a very small chance of getting him. But I'm banking on the fact that, while he emulates Jordan, he doesn't want to be forever in his shadow. And I think if he comes to New York, as opposed to Chicago, which is clearly the best fit for him from a basketball perspective, he will be a basketball/sports icon like we've never seen.

I know it doesn't matter what I think (since I'm not a coach), but I'd rather be a legendary college coach than a pro coach. Every day of the week.

People in Chicago like Phil Jackson, but they don't love him. Bobby Knight is revered in the state of Indiana. I bet some people there were happy when Myles Brand died.
