Has anyone ever taken one of these? I need to either take a leave or quit entirely and I don't know how to go about this. I don't know how long I will need - I do know I need to do this now and my caseload would not allow me to just take a vacation. I need to go now and I need someone to cover my cases.

As you are aware due to our earlier instant messaging communication, I received this morning a letter addressed: "Dear debt capital markets professional:". It is one of the more disturbing pieces of correspondence I have received in 2005.

Do you have a mentor (that you trust)? May be a good place to start. If not, I'd still start by asking some partner you trust. It'll ultimately be up,probably, to the department head and HR will be involved at some point, but I'd start by finding someone to help get you to the right person with the right script.

I've done this. Something came up and I requested a two-month LoA. It's not that hard (depending on who you work for). I actually took two weeks of paid vacation and the rest as LoA. Firms don't frown on it as much as everyone thinks because (1) they'd rather keep you and they know you'll quit if they say no and (2) they don't have to pay you during the LoA.

I went first to the chair of the hiring committee and asked if it would be possible and let him know how long I needed. He gave me the okay, as long as the partners I worked for did as well. Then I went to the head of our office and then the head of the corporate department. They said the same. You can go to them and tell them that something very serious and very personal (if you don't want to discuss it) has come up and you need __ months away. It's easier, once you have the okays of the Hiring Committee, Firm and your department, to tell the partners you work for what you intend to do. Then it's not so much a request as it is a courtesy.

Good luck!

I know one person who took one for stress reasons. They gave her two months w/o pay. She just said she was having a breakdown, and had a pile of visits to psychiatrists to prove it. I think they gave her the loa because they feared not doing so would invite litigation.

Hopefully, you're just pissed because your raise and bonus sucked.

Family Medical Leave Act, if you satisfy the conditions: on job 1 year, not-so-small place, taking care of a family member. But I think there is a notice provision.

Not much of one under the FMLA. As long as a health care provider is filling out the form saying that you (or a family member) have a serious health condition, employers are very wise to allow the leave, regardless of how little actual notice is given.

Observations from this past weekend

-A six hour car trip, not necessarily pleasant under the best of circumstances, is not at all fun when one's wife is in an advanced state of pregnancy;

-"The Island" was a surprisingly entertaining movie, far less sucky than I expected. Scarlet Johansen is way hot;

-"Cinderella Man" also sucked less than I expected, but I still can't stand Renee Zelweger;

-Watching your father-in-law whip out a bottle Jagermeister and try to pass it off (out of ignorance) as a classy after-dinner-drink to one's parents of Germanic extraction can be highly amusing;

-3 days is both too long and too brief of a time with family.

You can join me. I'm giving notice, selling my place, and going to Europe for four months starting April 27. The theme is the Biggest Parties of Europe tour. Queen's Day in Amsterdam. Running of the Bulls in Spain. World Cup in Germany. Tomatina festival in Spain. Ibiza. Dalmatian Coast in Croatia. Maybe the Cheese Rolling Festival in England or the Wife Carrying Festival in Finland. I'm still playing with the itinerary.

Come home August 31, go to Burning Man, throw myself a big turning 40 party, work a couple months, and then go to Chile and Argentina next winter (their summer) for a few months.

ThurgreedMarshall 12-27-2005 02:14 PM

Christmas Day Night

So, on Sunday, my gf and I went out to dinner because we'd already filled all family obligations on Saturday and during the day on Sunday, and neither one of us is cooking a damn thing. We pick a cool spot in the Meatpacking District that's supposed to be good (Spice Market) and head over.

Great space. Cool layout. We get there at 10:00 and there are a good amount of people still eating and coming in. It's two levels and they take us downstairs. They seat us, we order, the food is very, very good, etc., etc.

I notice that at the booth-like table next to us are three somewhat attractive hispanic girls (I'm thinking Argentina). Tight, impossibly trendy clothes. Heavy accents. And that look that always seems to say to anyone they're looking at, "I don't know you, but I just might fuck you and you know I'm wild in bed."

So, they're enjoying themselves, we're enjoying ourselves, when a tall, objectively good-looking, well built white boy comes over in his striped button-down (to whoever keeps wearing these: you guys need to let this trend go already -- you all look like the same idiot whenever you go out) and asks if he can join them.

One woman says yes, another says nothing and the last, clearly the leader, tells him no. He says, "What do we do now? She said yes and you said no." She tells him to stand. He does, but works his way into sitting down after a few short minutes.

We're watching this thinking, "Who the hell tries to pick up on Christmas Eve?" because of course we are out for a nice dinner because it's Christmas (as are a few other tables). But this place is for people (i) who don't give a shit what holiday it is and (ii) are out to make the scene. I've noticed I've seen about a half dozen legitimate models and we haven't even been there for that long.

So, he's kickin' it. Can't really hear him. But they were laughing loud and often before he got there and now they aren't. So, he's either doing really well and has their attention or he's doing horribly.

As he's working, the waiter comes over with a thousand dollar bottle of Cristal. He says, "The gentlemen upstairs wanted to buy you a drink." BANG! The first guy is completely undercut. Dead in the water. They all want to know who sent it, what he looks like, who he is, etc. First guy tries to recover, but can't and in 6 minutes is wishing them a good night while they don't pay attention to him and sip champagne.

With him out of the picture, the second guy (short and not bad but not good looking) comes down and just pulls up a chair without asking, sits down and instantly has them laughing. He's in there.

I think, "Smooth. But a thousand dollars? Fuck that shit. I don't care how much money I have. I'm not buying anyone a thousand dollar bottle of champagne."

My gf and I have a laugh at Guy Number 1's expense.

What a lot of people don't realize is that it does not take all that much in the way of looks to be a model. A supermodel is a bit of a different story.
