And I think if he comes to New York, as opposed to Chicago, which is clearly the best fit for him from a basketball perspective, he will be a basketball/sports icon like we've never seen.

Is one bigger than the other?

The greatest superstar in the history of the world (okay, maybe Ali is up there, too) played in Chicago. I don't think Lebron needs NYC (or Chicago) to become as big as Jordan. He just has to win.

If you're really that good, it doesn't matter where you play.

Not a basketball fan, but 2 to the money part. In three years, he could make $18 million if he goes or $9 million if he stays. Why not take the extra $9 million and figure out what to do afterward, if things don't work out in the pros? Go to another school, become a tv commentator, retire, whatever.

I agree, it's a matter of degree once you get up to Jordan's level. But I think if Jordan had played in NYC, he would have been even bigger (if at all possible). Maybe "bigger" just means "made more money."

And Kevin Durant, if he stays where he is, no matter how good he gets, will never, ever be as big as Jordan or even Kobe, because of where he plays. That's a poor analogy for Chicago because Chicago gets its appropriate amount of shine. But the media is here. I think that adds to it.

could MJ have been bigger? hard to imagine, but maybe he could in NY.

and NY/Chicago you can argue about, but you cannot say it doesn't matter where you play, because superstar in Texas or Ohio or Michigan does not equal superstar in LA or NYC or Chicago-

I really don't think it matters if your that good. The Washington Nationals aren't even a blip on the baseball radar, but that hasn't really affected Strasburg's celebrity. And while St. Louis is a great baseball town, it's still in the middle of nowhere, but Pooholes seems to be doing just fine. The guy gets just as much press as any Yankee or Red Sox.

Because if he really wants to win a championship right away he should not come here. Although, if you put Bosh and him on the same team, I don't think it matters who else is on the floor.

I don't think Kobe is even close to MJ's level in the US. And he wouldn't be even without his Colorado incident. When MJ was playing in the '90s, everyone realized that they were watching the best ever. Has anyone EVER said that about Kobe?

Yes, sickeningly. I didn't post the rant before the Finals, but there were a least a few articles that basically said "if Kobe wins this year, and wins one or two more in the next couple of years" then he has to be considered among the best ever. The ifs made me TUALBIMM, but get ready to hear it more on Friday if the Lakers win.

level of what, fame or talent? Not sure how you know where he'd be on fame w/o the "colorado incident," but before that he was just Shaq's support, since he's proven he stands w/o Shaq. He might be mega-huge.

i hate Kobe in all ways, and I only hated MJ while the Pistons could still beat him. and i feel that while they are very different players, MJ gets the talent nod, but fame isn't based upon talent, and talent doesn't vary depending on which city you play in. and we were talking about how much bigger LJ would be if he played in NY.

Nah. He's completely derivative. No one had seen anything like Jordan when he was in the league (Lebron is similar in that way). Kobe bases his whole game on MJ's. Kobe is very talented and probably has a better jump shot than MJ, but he's not as talented as MJ was, he's not as charismatic and he exists at a time in the league when his fame can't match Jordan's. Jordan entered the league and grew at the absolute perfect time. Kobe is just one of many incredible talents.

Maybe. But I'd take the Bulls with Jordan and Pippen in their primes over pretty much any team to have won anything since Jordan left the Bulls. I'm pretty sure you would too.

Michael is the best. I saw him from great seats those years we beat him. He was too fast. I can't describe it, but his first step was clearly just too fast for Dumars to handle. Joe did better than anyone else could, but the best defender in the league had no chance.

I mostly just listened and looked when something exciting happened. The last bit of the game had lots of excitement -- goalkeeper red card, penalty kick goal on the hapless replacement goalkeeper, and another goal at the end for a 3-0 win. Put that in your stats.
