No, it wants those who it believes to be below them to be below them. Approaching or surpassing them is what they care about. They're real, white Americans and America is for them, darnit.

That's part of the problem. The other part is they aren't irrational from their point of view, which is status-based.

There was an interesting recent This American Life about Jason Kessler, Charlottesville "Unite the Right" organizer and the Proud Boys. Probably veered a bit too much into rituals and stated non-racist beliefs of that group, but the interview with Kessler was interesting. He didn't get a job, found out a woman did, and he, like the rest of them, was convinced that white men are the most oppressed people in America.

One way to look at this is that those people aren't getting what they want. Another is to understand that these people are morons who have zero understanding of oppression.

Meanwhile, its most visible program was IP, go figure.

I went to night school at Temple, and I could always justify the lower GPA of the night students: night school classes contain day students who have more time to study.

But there's no getting around the lower average LSAT score of the night students. The day program filled up more quickly so the students at the lower end of the "day acceptance range" got pushed to the night program, with the hope of eventually getting into the day program.

My small IP firm was filled with former night students who eventually got very pedigree conscious as the firm grew. In-house is much more law school-diverse.

When interviewing candidates for a patent position, I'm always biased toward the former night law students, unless they waited until after law school was over to get their patent reg. no. I hate that. Take the damn exam before starting LS or during your first summer. Sometimes there is a good reason for waiting, but generally I crucify them for that. Just not good planning.

Not surprising. He tends to over-manage. And the mistake he made in game 2 of the division series was so fucking egregious and stupid that we made it to game 7 of the ALCS despite him.

That said, it wouldn't bother me if he stayed on. I think most people in NY reacted to the news with a shrug.

Come on, man. That kind of hyperbole is beneath you.

You can probably find more than a few within an hour’s drive from your office. Heck, take the T to Dorchester. I bet one of My People* has one in his front yard.

Alternatively, I’m headed to the Ancestral Homeland this weekend. I’ll let you know if I find one up there.

In general, when these issues are discussed I think there is too much of a focus on the women (even when the focus is entirely sympathetic) and too little on the fact that men keep doing this stuff. I guess one thing I wonder is, how many men are the problem? 1% 10% 30% 50% Not sure how one could really tell, either.

It depends on the degree. 1% for rape. 99% for the attitude in some form or another.

We had an interesting discussion about something related last night. The gist was that men are also the victims of sexual harassment, but that because of societal biases (what man would ever say no?) and the fact that the unspoken physical domination threat is not present (a guy doesn't really fear rape) it does not get the same attention. The wife did not believe that I or my buddy who was there could ever have had an unwanted advance, but both of us had.

What I don't understand is why firms don't raid law school night school programs. The people there are often diverse, have worked all their lives (including through school--and the class load is like 1 fewer per semester while the curriculum and professors are exactly the same), and would be completely loyal to any law firm that brought them in.

I had the opportunity to talk to Disney's GC about what I thought would be an innovative way to bring in more diversity to his outside counsel and mentioned this. Of course he said he was the product of a night school law school education and seemed like he thought it to be a good idea. I don't understand the stigma attached to it. But it's there. Can any of you who worked at a large firm (hell, or any firm) name one person who came from night school? This idea that the best talent comes from the most elite schools is a joke. Our firm's partnership adheres to this delusion and there are very few partners who went to elite schools! There is a real disconnect about how people process themselves versus everyone else.

TM

You and I went to the same school (though not knowingly at the same time). I went nights but managed to finish in 3 years by going summers. I was in a study group with an older black woman. She did very well. She went to a top biglaw firm. A few of the other people who went to night school -- at least started there -- went to biglaw firms.

The weirdest thing ever is when in some huge fucking case she and I were across the table from each other at a deposition. After that, she went in house.

Not really in touch with her anymore because I refuse to have anything to do with anything from law school because every god damned request they ever make is one that ends with a request for money.

Me, I got shit on by every biglaw law firm that interviewed at my school. Then I did an interview with a plaintiff's firm and I am imagining that was like coming out of the closet may be. You suddenly realize that something about what your were living was just wrong.

Idk about you, but I doubt any guy here who's been hit on has felt harassed. From female bosses, co-workers, gay, straight, it's ego inflation. When guys do it to women, it's different. It's got more of a dominance and demeaning thing to it.

Men do, however, face a form of sexual discrimination from other men that's rarely discussed. I've seen insecure partners hate the shit out of younger associates with, how shall we say it... more native charisma, looks, and confidence. If you're a kid of even moderately attractive appearance and some personality, and you work for the wrong kinda-soft, insecure partner early in your career, or some older partner who's feeling his virility and power ebbing, you can get fucked over pretty hard. The fragility of the male ego can't be overstated.

So I don't know if Gurriel should be suspended, or just criticized. It was pretty awful, but I just don't know what has happened in the past. I don't mean when Jackie R broke in, I mean the last few years. I do know that suspending for a few of the first regular season games is silly, and actually a bit of an insult itself. "Yes, suspension is in order, but let's do a meaningless one?" This is not the NFL season.

My last big law had an office in Peoria. I went there to do a seminar on IP. Stayed at the Pere Marquette Hotel! The morning of the seminar I went to run the treadmill, clear my head, rehearse my blabbing. The work out room was small and in the basement, secluded. While I'm on the treadmill a guy comes in. I later found out he was the bell hop, but he was not yet in his uniform.

He starts fidgeting around with stuff, and now I was getting nervous. And see all I wanted was a pleasant workout, to get ready for the seminar.

Then, "do you want your dick sucked?"

Okay, now I'm completely thrown off what I'm trying to get ready for. Completely derailed me. And plus, we are in the small very remote space. If he knocked me out, or stabbed me or whatever, it might be a long while before anyone found me. Did not inflate my ego.

I do think what guys do to women is different, because it's more tied up with the dominance, demeaning and power stuff, but it's still really not much of an ego boost to have your crotch grabbed by some gay old power broker when you're a young political operative, for example.
