Unless you expect hyperinflation to wipe out not only the value of currency but also the electronic record keeping systems related to it and other financial instruments, surely one can store gold more efficiently by purchasing it virtually and letting it remain stored in a bank rather than bringing it home to your own safe.
Now, if you want to melt it down and paint yourself with it, that's another matter. Just be sure to leave a patch of skin exposed so you don't suffocate.
