I'm not sure this is true -- some of the elimination games become deathly boring as both teams seek to avoid mistakes and, if they score a goal, packing it in defensively.

The second and third group games are more open because the teams often have different incentives. One may need a win more than the other, or need goals, so they open up the field, which allows for more countering and open space.

Or not, as I am off to watch the second halves of both 0-0 games right now.

With Australia up there seems to be little incentive for Ghana to score as they would surely rather play the US than England.

If Serbia score to tie, then Ghana is out on total goals. Ghana's on a knife-edge, because they can't really control whether they finish second or out.

Which do we want, Ghana or Serbia?

PRETORIA, South Africa – Algeria soccer player Rafik Saifi slapped a female journalist across the face as the aftermath of the United States’ dramatic World Cup victory turned ugly at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday night.

While walking through the interview zone, Saifi spotted writer Asma Halimi, who works for Algerian newspaper Competition, and struck her with his open hand in front of dozens of witnesses. Halimi responded by striking the player in the mouth.

The Aussie / Serbian game was actually quite enjoyable - wide open, lots of shots, chippiness, a waved-off tying goal.

The Guardian liveblog of the match is a fun read.

ETA: for example.

Quote:

4.05pm: The Isner-Mahut battle is a bizarre mix of the gripping and the deadly dull. It's tennis's equivalent of Waiting For Godot, in which two lowly journeymen comedians are forced to remain on an outside court until hell freezes over and the sun falls from the sky. Isner and Mahut are dying a thousand deaths out there on Court 18 and yet nobody cares, because they're watching the football. So the players stand out on their baseline and belt aces past each-other in a fifth set that has already crawled past two hours. They are now tied at 18-games apiece.

On and on they go. Soon they will sprout beards and their hair will grow down their backs, and their tennis whites will yellow and then rot off their bodies. And still they will stand out there on Court 18, belting aces and listening as the umpire calls the score. Finally, I suppose, one of them will die.

Ooh, I can see the football out of the corner of my eye. England still 1-0 up!

Yeah, it was a fun second half. The German fans I was watching it with for some reason were very keen for an Aussie win, some of whom did not seem to understand that there was almost no way for Australia to advance.

The waved off goal, though, wasn't really close. He was clearly offsides. Unlike the U.S. disallowed goal.

ETA: Huh. I thought we woudl have to play the winner of England/Germany in the second round. Apparently not.

It would suck if they lined it up that way because it would create the distinct possibility of a group rematch in the round of 8. As it's set the only place two group teams can meet is in the finals. In 2002 they did it differently, so that group teams could meet in the semis, I believe to ensure that South Korea and Japan both would be assured of playing in their home countries if they emerged from their groups (i.e., both their groups were assigned to the half of the bracket played in their respective countries.)

That you would post this observation 15 minutes before an "Atticus's sister is sexually available to many" post is not surprising. What is surprising is that you have a veritable elephant's memory for alleged outlook inconsistencies in the posts of others, spanning years.

iPhone 4

Got mine and am very pleased. It's a big step up and the only reason I can think of not to buy one is AT&T (although their service has never been any worse than Verizon's for me).

I'm still messing with it, but the thing I like most about it is the speed. Everything is faster. Internet, opening and closing applications, downloading and updating apps, synching, texts, etc., are all much, much faster. This is the least talked about benefit and it's the one that will be most appreciated.

The camera is really good. The flash works well for a camera phone. I haven't really fucked around with the hd recording feature.

The screen is nicer, but haven't watched any video on it yet(besides Deadwood for 5 seconds, but that show was filmed in the dark). The clarity is great. The colors are excellent.

Haven't tested the facetime feature because I don't know anyone else who has the phone yet.

The multi-tasking feature makes sense and is easy to use. The app folder has been a long time coming.

The phone is definitely thinner, heavier (which I like--the first one had a nice weight and feel, the second one and the 3Gs felt plastic-y) and maybe a touch longer and a touch less wide. It feels much better in your hand.

Isn't it ironic* that the one feature I haven't used or even thought about is the phone? Sound quality going in both directions is supposed to be better, but I don't really care because I hate talking on the phone and really only use it to talk to my daughter.

That's all I got so far.

TM

*In an Alanis kind of way.

eta: I ordered the thing over their website on the 15th and they actually delivered it a day early (for free). Good bye lines at the Apple Store.

eata: One more thing, two more great features are, (i) the grouped email, so all your emails from multiple accounts are on one screen and (ii) the email string feature, which puts a little number on the email (on the email list page). That number tells you how many emails you've sent or received in that string. And If you tap that number it moves to a listing of all of those emails, which is amazingly convenient for work.

I am all-around happy with those results. An African team advances. The US does not have to play Germany, whose disciplined defense always gives us difficulty. And Germany, a team I really like watching play, advances. (It is all about me, of course).

The US is also in a great position in the elimination rounds -- a quadrant that does not include Germany, Brazil, Argentina, England, or any other team rated in the top dozen or so. Ghana's not an easy team, certainly, and they beat the US in 2006 -- but we're better now, and Ghana is worse without Essien.

I am struggling not to get my hopes up.
