My thoughts on Thursday nite NBC

Friends - Really laboring. They took one idea that should have lasted for 6-7 minutes and stretched it out for the whole show. The writing just isn't there.

Scrubs - Very funny. Although more needs to be done with Dr. Cox and the other old cremudgeon[sp?]. Their acts are getting old. Fast.

Will and Grace - Mira Sorvino is scary thin. I almost did not recognize her. She was funny. Much more so than Grace.

ER - No idea. Saw the previews. Something about war and Dr. Carter. Looked silly.

Extreme Makeoever - O.K. I know its not on NBC, but I like seeing these people get chopped up and redone. Some of the "afters" are pretty amazing. The most disturbing thing was a preview of one of the upcoming makeovers. A guy lost 200? 300? pounds. They show him running. He looks like he is wearing a baggy skin suit. It was very gross. I can't wait to see the show.

aV
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

a - agree. Once Rachel had a baby she bacame less hot and so no interest in her love life. And the whole ChandlerMonica marriage - yawn.

ER - is finally actually starting to get interesting. Luka died in Africa. Carter (with his new inheritance) is going to find him and to make changes to health care.

The Practice - I actually thought I would hate it without Bobby and Lindsay and Helen. Turns out, I actually hated them. And the show is better without them.

The new guy (can't remember his name - was on Sex, Lies and Videotape) plays an absolutely perfect sleazebag lawyer - and he's a wonderful letch. Watch it just once - see if you don't enjoy him and say - hey, I know a lawyer just like him.

West Wing - If you've given up on it - come back. Admittedly, they phoned it in the last couple of years, but now there is a lot of controversy and tension over who kidnapped the Bartlett daughter - will she be killed - what's the retaliation from killing a murderous world leader - and will the speaker of the house ever step down (Bartlett stepped down when his daughter was kidnapped and the speaker of the house - John Gooden - has taken over and has impressed the staff and the American public.)
Again - just watch it once and see if you don't get hooked again.

I am reminded of a BBC program about fox-hunting bans in the UK. The fox population is apparently getting rather out of control, and they are apparently moving into areas of London. They had a hilarious interview with a little girl, about 7 I guess, who was raising bunnies in her back garden for some school project, and the foxes devoured them. And her kitten, too. It sounded like they really strewed bunnie-guts all over the place. This was hilarious because the little girl was all mournful in her Alice band mouthing these animal-rights pieties ("the poor bunnies didn't deserve to die, they don't hurt people, harmless bunnies shouldn't be killed like that, people need to have respect for animals so this doesn't happen again"). Really really funny. Only the British can have quite so much fun tormenting children.

On the lukewarm recommendation of the local paper's TV critic, I made the mistake of watching Navy NCIS, the latest in redundant acronymic crime shows from CBS. Horrid. It was like watching JAG without the lawyers flying jets. In slow motion. Mark Harmon remains the only man who could talk me into a MFM with Mrs. Grinch, and he's miles ahead of the JAG folks in terms of conveying moods with his eyebrows, but I won't be watching again. I guess it's target-marketed to the folks who mist up and cream their jeans when any television character says "Semper Fi" in a non-ironic context.

BTW, speaking of military-themed CSI ripoffs, did I mention Red Cap is the most disappointing series ever to air on BBC America? I mean, after Ground Force America, a show which perversely is not about the military?

Post this on another board (hint: PB), and you'll get a reasoned discourse of how way-left politics is actually the apotheosis of sexism.

Modern liberalism's only great success is how it has caused far-righters to fall all over themselves explaining how political movements dominated by women and minorities are necessarily more racist and sexist than themselves. We've re-written the rulebook. Yay, us!

For the rest of the post, I agree with you, BUT I think the NFL did a pretty shitty thing to make Matt Millen pay $200,000 for not interviewing anyone but Mariucci. Millen got a hard on the second he heard that Mariucci was available, and it was obvious to EVERYONE on the get-go that he'd be courting Mariucci hard. Spending a lot of efforts to bring in other candidates would have been a waste of time and resources, and Millen was being honest about the fact that he didn't want make any token guestures when it was clear that he had his sights on Mariucci. Five minority candidates were invited to interview, but they all declined because they knew Mariucci would get the job. Millen shouldn't have to hide his intentions OR go through an otherwise useless exercise of inviting people in only to say, nope, we're going with Mariucci.

Speaking of the NBC lineup, I watched Coupling. I'm a mild fan of the British version although it doesn't wear very well in re-view. Why did they bother to reproduce the American show? The scripts are nearly identical except for minor slang alterations (cuddle becomes snuggle or something equally absurd). Even the mannerisms of the actors seem exactly the same.

Yeah, I love the guy. He's got a show on FoxSportsNW every Sunday night - it's pretty funny. He usually goes out on the streets with some "cause" and it's funny how no one recognizes him. One time, he was flipping pancakes at the IHOP and screwing up madly, but the customers were real nice.
For the name, I can only say that he is deeply religious and met his wife at the church (I believe - I could be wrong). So I guess it beats Jezebel as a religious name.

And can I just say for the record - the Red Sox suck. What the hell is wrong with you people? Can't swing a bat?

Other than that, I'm really hard pressed to understand why this show had the legs it did. It is not a compendium of cultural knowledge like Seinfeld, and it resorts too quickly to the "Scene: X kisses Y; audience goes WHOOOOOO!" school of dramatic twists.

Watching this show in its last season is like watching a relative with Alzheimer's fade away in a nursing home. One that you were never close to but your family said you were supposed to love.

BTW, Ross looks like absolute shit. His career is over when this gets put to bed.

Huh. I thought this was a disappointment. I kept asking, "Why does that Elliot chick look like crap?" It was like she skipped makeup. Oh, it's the standard Makeover Plotline. Of course.

Agree on Cox/Kelso thing. Cox has annoyed me from Day 1. His dialog is good; his delivery got old by the end of the first episode.

I'll add my own: Angel. I think this should be mandatory FB watching, since the entire season is about being good inside an evil law firm, and the compromises we make in the interests of continued employment.

Making Gunn a lawyer was an interesting twist. I was wondering how they'd get around Cal. Rules Prof. Conduct, Rule 1-310. One down, four to go.

Looks like they'll make good use of Harmony.

Angel is on at 9 pm on Wednesdays on the WB. I guess that might change by timezone, but I doubt it - they skimmed the censors' limits very closely last season, and I see no reason it will stop. Spike's pasty ass is probably not prime-time fare.

BR(no matter how weak last season was, I will always love it for the number of times it made me say "they did NOT actually just say that, did they?")C

You people keep reminding me of songs I thoughtlessly omitted. How can I have left off the Police? The Violent Femmes? The B-52s? Sigh.

The Eagles' Desperado, too. On a spring break roadtrip in England, my car mates decided we needed to memorize it, so we listened to it OVER and OVER.

Most memorable Hotel California moment: the lyrics being hilariously mangled by a bar band at a Swiss hotel on an island in the middle of the Nile.

Even I don't have the patience to argue with you over the minor point of whether Friends has always sucked ass or merely sucks ass now.

Considering the fact that I introduced you to The Office, you'd think you'd have a little more respect for my "erudite" tastes in television.

This brightened my day. For that, I thank you.

About Less getting passed over by the broads he is casting his wide net over. Very pithy, and punny.

Yeah, but this is different. Wonder if the prosecutor will open with his speeches on "personal responsibility" as he blames his trafficing on "addiction."

realityblurred --

Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica has become "the second-highest rated cable show after Sex and the City," according to TV Guide. As a result, MTV has renewed it for a second season that will start shooting in October, CNN reports. The current season ends Oct. 14. Meanwhile, Nick Lachey's record company "has decided to put [his new] album off until Nov. 11," in part because of the way the show "has made music fans take [Jessica] about as seriously as they do Anna Nicole Smith," The Daily News reports. But Jessica's father tells TV Guide that she "knows she's on camera" and "[s]ince she was a little girl, people have been calling her a dumb blonde, ... she begins to assume the role that everybody expects of her. That doesn't mean that's who she is."

Poor dad. Hard to admit you raised a spoiled clueless brat. On the plus side, she does have big jugs.
