Millen got a hard on the second he heard that Mariucci was available, and it was obvious to EVERYONE on the get-go that he'd be courting Mariucci hard. Spending a lot of efforts to bring in other candidates would have been a waste of time and resources, and Millen was being honest about the fact that he didn't want make any token guestures when it was clear that he had his sights on Mariucci. Five minority candidates were invited to interview, but they all declined because they knew Mariucci would get the job. Millen shouldn't have to hide his intentions OR go through an otherwise useless exercise of inviting people in only to say, nope, we're going with Mariucci.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can cry me a river too. I agree that if he reaches out to black candidates and they turn down the interview, fining him is a little harsh. But otherwise, I don't really care that the team (and please tell me where it says that $200K came out of his pocket) had to pay for not considering someone else. If you didn't, the rule would have no affect at all. Everyone would say, "But I already made up my mind," after the fact. This is no big deal and no one should be whining about it.

And it really wouldn't serve the broader purpose of telling teams not to make up their mind on the basis of the fact that a candidate was in the same fraternity as the owner, or has a similar golf handicap, or got chummy with him at some minstrel show.

The point of the rule is to force teams to "think outside the box." That is, interview people that they wouldn't in their white-blinders way, otherwise look at, because they're not the same, retreaded coaches that constantly resurface with a new team.

THat's why the Lions were punished: they went straight for a coaching retread without any kind of broader consideration of other candidates. That's what the league is trying to discourage.

Now, TM, having offered your thoughts on Rush, what about your thoughts on Isaiah Thomas?

"Rush Limbaugh didn't say Donovan McNabb was a bad quarterback because he is black. He said that the media have overrated McNabb because he is black, and Limbaugh is right. He didn't say anything that he shouldn't have said, and in fact he said things that other commentators should have been saying for some time now. I should have said them myself. I mean, if they didn't hire Rush Limbaugh to say things like this, what they did they hire him for? To talk about the prevent defense? "

http://www.freep.com/sports/lions/matt26_20030726.htm (Detroit Free Press article about the fine. "The fine, levied by NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue, was directed at Millen alone. The team was not fined and will not lose draft choices as the result of its failure to comply with the NFL's initiative on minority hiring.")

Jerry Jones had no intention of hiring anyone but Bill Parcells during the off season, but he got around the fine by having a courtesy interview with Dennis Green. Green seemed to be on the token interview circuit last year, because the Jaguars also talked to him before hiring their new (white) head coach whose name escapes me.

Frankly, if I were the NFL I'd be more pissed off at the 49ers who strung along Ted Cotrell and Greg Blanche (who, along with Jim Mora, interviewed twice) for awhile before turning around and hiring out Dennis Erickson from the oh-so-successful Seahawks. Erickson said he had no idea he was running for the job four days before he got it.

For the record, Dennis Erickson has no idea about a lot of things.
Like offense, for instance.
Years of alcohol poisoning will do that to you.
Also for the record, Dennis was a Beaver coach when he interviewed - and the Seahawks are doing just fine without his "ability as a coach." See record.

In their defense (since I work with a bunch of Niner fans), they really didn't know much about him. Just that he was a highly successful college coach (first Miami then the Beavers) - and that he was in that "other" division that the Raiders are in that they never pay attention to.

Hmm. Ok, lets do a poetry/lyrics contest. It must be FB related in some way or another.

That doesn't mean you have to mention specific users, you can go back to some conversation or argument we have had, however the relationship to the board has to be clear.

I won't say there has to be any particular length or form, what form people like will be part of who wins I imagine.

I'll create a new board specifically for the entries. Lets say all entries must be completed by 2 weeks from now, so Friday October 17. And lets say noon.

Depending on how many entries there are, we'll either make a poll to let people pick their favorite, or, the mods/admins will pick the top 5 and then let everyone vote.

The winner will receive a 50 dollar gift certificate from amazon.com or a sex toy shop. Or if they prefer something career related, they can use it towards Legal Authority or Law Crossing.

First off, this contest is not fair to the uncreative types on the board.

Second, I think the posts should be on this board, so that they gernate posts. THen when someboyd submits the post that is his or her's entry, then you copy it and bring it to the other board you create for this.

Third, can I use an entry from one of my socks onthe old board, or do I need fresh material?

Sort of, but with far more subtlety. The four questions at the Passover seder all stem from one question - "Why is this night different from all other nights?" Thus, LFM was jibing me by saying how would my Ahnold costume be different from my behavior any other night.

Why am I explaining jokes with cultural references outside her ken to Paigow? It's like trying to explain why the sky is blue to a 7-year old. One feels a moral obligation to not deceive the child that rainbows are "magic" or something, but you know that there is no way to get the child to understand the electromagnetic spectrum and how light refracts at different angles based upon its wavelength. Meanwhile, the child is so pleased with herself that she simply understood the obvious "passover" reference "as passed over," which is clever for the child, that maybe I should just smile and say "yeah, that's good."
