Why are people getting so worked up about whether they can "ignore" other posters? The whole thing is ridiculous. Why do people even use this function?

Very few people post pure spam (although the RP tribute sock is skating close to the line). It seems like most posters who are using "ignore" are doing it because they don't want to read stuff from people they don't like (boo hoo), usually including flames/ridicule in response to negative opinions they've expressed about the "ignored" poster. If that's what's going on, it's childish even by junior high standards.

If you want to use the ignore list, fine. But please shut the fuck up about who's on it. That doesn't achieve any purpose at all that's relevant to the supposed reason for the list (to stop stalking, real harassment, bababooey, etc.).* If you post that you're "ignoring" someone -- and it's true -- you can't read their response anyway. You could just as easily send a PM to them saying "don't bother with me, I'm ignoring you." So don't be prima donnas with tender sensibilities. Either: (1) suck it up and learn to take it as well as dish it out, or (2) use the list, but shut the hell up about who's on it and how you change it weekly. Please.

(I know your situation is different, fringey, since you can't ignore sebby. But for God's sake please take it to IM...or just hit back hard instead of complaining about him being an admin.)

In February 2002 back on the Stalin Board, Count mentioned that Infirm was considering a threaded discussion forum and a certain FBer --- who shall remain monikerless, but whose initials are PP --- asked for an ignore function. My two cents was then* what it is now --- the ignore function wastes a lot of discussion bandwidth discussing the actual and threatened use of the ignore function.

*I was wrong about a couple of things --- the threat is made more often than it is carried out, and K-racing is only Mostly Dead. The universe continues to cool to a uniform temperature, however.

Did I miss something? Was the fact that these are wild animals and that as wild animals could attack a person at any time being questioned? I won't say that I agree with using these creatures for entertainment purposes but if you are going to you should never forget that they are wild -- ie they are not just bigger versions of the domestic kitties at home and even if they were have you ever seen what those precious kitties do to mice or the back of your fucking hand when they are "playing?" I love the fact that e-mails from the ABA to my work e-mail address are blocked by our IT software because allegedly:

"The original message content contained a virus or was blocked due to blocking rules and has been removed."

I don't think the ignore function should exist at all. Its led to some really stupid shit (people posting endlessly about their ignore lists, etc...). When someone bores me, I just scroll past their post. Its like bad television... if you can manipulate a mouse, you can turn the fucking channel.

When someone ridicules/attacks someone else, she should be prepared to take the flames that ensue, particulary if she targets one who she knows will flame her pretty harshly. She should not be able to cry for an admin reprieve to escape responsibility for her own reckless comments - and admins should not indulge such whiners. If you insult someone, you know the consequences.

As merely an example of how things should work, I can recall that TM and I had a flame war some time ago which got nasty, but both of us stood our ground. He didn't cry foul and ask for and admin reprieve nor did I (which turned out badly for me because he wound up beating me like a redheaded stepchild, but that's beside the point).

Simply put, ignore should be removed because its only used/abused by those who seek to dish it out but can't take it.*
