Chinese Police Detain Man Over T-Shirt

BEIJING - Police in eastern China briefly detained a foreign man after local residents complained they were offended by his T-shirt listing staring, overcharging and other common gripes of foreigners in China, a newspaper reported Friday.

Police were called following an altercation between the man and diners in a restaurant in the eastern city of Nanjing, the Beijing Today weekly reported. The man, whose name and nationality weren't given, was taken to a precinct station and allowed to leave after about an hour after promising not to wear the shirt again, it said.

The paper said the back of the man's T-shirt was printed in Chinese with a list entitled "Ten Warnings for Chinese," that included "don't stare at foreigners," and "charge foreigners the same prices as Chinese," the paper said. It said the man told police he bought the t-shirt from a vendor in China.

Only thing that ever worked for me was the "basic civilization" diet, which consisted of eating nothing unless I was sitting at a table with non-disposable plates, metal utensils and glasswear that breaks if dropped. (Otherwise known as the "no snacking between meals" diet.) Close runner ups were the "eat something, anything, before 9 am" diet and the "no take out" diet.

Edited to say that I recognize the common theme we both have: it has to be a fundamental lifestyle choice, not a "don't eat that it's bad" thing, to work.

When I get home tonight, this being a typical sunny, hot, schools-out day, there will be at least ten kids in my house or on my deck or in my yard, and probably seven of them will eat dinner there. Were I to follow that diet, I would rapidly lose weight, culminating in my thin, svelte death by starvation.

I wouldn't care how the kids eat (OK, unless they were mine, in which case they would be at your backyard patio door holding a plate of your nice lean grilled just-as-good-as-steak-no-really fish asking for a second fork, please, if it's not too much trouble, so they could attack the thing correctly). What, you always eat with the kids, and the same thing, and with the same table manners? Exile them to the kiddie table, by god, before it's too late!!

Anyway, to heck with having kids, try eating lunch at your desk during a conference call under those strictures.

The way to work in KK according to Weight Watchers...

Each "hot now" original KK is 5 points.
Daily number of points allowed on WW is about 15-20 (depending on your weight).
Thus, you can eat 3-4 KK's per day and still lose weight (of course you get water for your appetizer and dessert).

Having had my foot run over by a morbidly obese gentleman in his little motorized wheely-cart, I beg to differ. However, I acknowledge that fatness is, on casual encounter, often a less obtrusive personal vice than smoking; until it runs over your foot, breaks your furniture or spills over onto your subway seat, at least. (And re: second hand smoke ... nevermind, don't get me started. Suffice it to say that the apparent health risks of living with an obese parent or partner appear to be vastly higher than the health risks associated with living with a smoker or working in a smoky environment.)

But, I would argue that fatness itself cannot be held to be offensive. Thus I am troubled by the "outa my way fattie" and "I don't want to see it" stuff. One may claim that some people make unwise choices about their physical presentation given their individual physical characteristics, but that can really be held no more "offensive" than, say, someone my (stubby) height who stupidly wear capris and flats. One might claim that people have dressed or otherwise presented themselves improperly, but, if a skinny person would be "allowed" to wear it or get away with it, so is a fat person - one can only point to a lack of wisdom or strategy on the matter. The obese have just as much place wearing a bikini at the beach as anyone else, walking down the street as anyone else, shopping, whatever.

But I'm a little weird in my insistance on the huge difference between "good idea/bad idea" and "should/shouldn't - correct/incorrect."
