I spent yesterday listening to literally dozens of stories of people dying. I was at a charity event for brain tumor research. While it was very moving, I think a whole day of talking to people about our respective horrible personal tragedies has desensitized me.

I generally love my 30s except for one thing: everyone's animals are dying. My sister's beloved Holden is being put down as I type. He's a twelve and a half year old lab, and he had a sudden case of the can't breathes this morning. The vet tried to get him going, but it was obvious after a few hours that without an oxygen tube the pooch wasn't going to last long. I rushed over to the vet when my sister called with uncontrollable crying, and it was awful to see such an active animal rendered pretty much motionless.

This is the fourth animal lost in my immediate family in the last two years (my boyfriend's two cats, the Displaced Dog and Holden). Of my friends, I've had to say goodbye to lots of cats and dogs in the same period of time. Not to mention all of the animals here over the last few years. All of us got our animals either in college or shortly after, and they're hitting the end of their natural lifespan more or less at the same time.

This sucks.
