It's Gotta Be the Shoes
I just saw the new Mars Blackmon ad. I love it and I miss Mike.

I'm really bummed because I can't find free video of the original "It's not the shoes" Mars ad. The only place I found it is AdCritic.com, which requires a $69 subscription...

Sorry for also posting a similar reminder on the SV board, but if you have not yet remembered that tomorrow is national admin day, there's still time to order flowers. It might be late for a respectable lunch reservation, though.

If you watched last week, or the week before, you know exactly how everyone performed.
Kim Locke: I still don't like her. Simon now loves her (I assume her vote numbers are trending up enough for him to take notice). Her voice is still iffy. Nice tone, terrible rhythm, uncanny ability to hit notes completely incorrectly. I find her performances grating, but what do I know about music. Whatever her problems, a good engineer can fix it. She does look better each week. Looks as if Fox is pimping to get her into the top 3. Clay Aiken: Very theatrical. His voice is great, his tone is great. He is a great singer. He just doesn't do anything for me. Simon is right about Broadway being perfect for him. When he becomes the next Sam Harris, he should thank Simon in the Playbill. Trenyce: I love her singing, though she always starts a little low. I thought she did well. I hated the outfit. Josh: Wow, he is really bad. Really, really, really bad. Of course, he's staying though. He was so hideously out of tune. Upon hearing it again with the OM, I just cannot believe how awful he was. Absolutely the worst performance this week. Carmen: She's painful. Awful. Terrible. They should put us out of her misery this week. Her vibrato and her voice on the "power notes" was almost unbearable. She bleats. Ruben: He sounded great this week. Though his voice was a little weak (he's sick), his performance was better than the past couple of weeks when he appeared to phone it in. Bottom 3: Trenyce, Kim L, and Carmen. Trenyce goes home because people are stupid. |

Kim: I liked her much more this week, not sure why. I was a fan of hers at the beginning, she seemed to lose it in the middle, but I think she's getting much more comfortable up there.
Clay: As Mom Deuced said, "a cutie patootie" (this was her first time ever watching the show). He'd be awesome in musical theater, Simon was right, and I don't know why that was so bad to say to him. He has a great voice and it would work really well in musicals. I think he could have a couple hit songs, get on the cover of Tiger Beat and then clean up in Les Miz or some non-dancey musical. Trenyce: Needs to get rid of the ridiculous outfits. Aren't there stylists on this show? Does no one help these people (besides irritating Herbal Essences colorists)? Her voice was good though she didn't seem to get the notes she was going for. Josh: I think this conversation regarding his performance captures his existence on the show at this point - Mom Deuced:Oh my God. He's not even close to the notes. Why is he here? Me: He's a Marine. Mom Deuced: Oh..... Well, at least he has something to fall back on. Carmen: I'm still trying to stop my ears from bleeding. Who sang that song? Celine? Mom Deuced and I couldn't remember. Ruben: Great job, and Mom Deuced gasped at how good he is. His voice had a hint of rasp (sickness? exhaustion?) and at one point I wasn't sure if he was caught up in the emotion of the song or if he forgot the words. Nevertheless, he still should win it. Did any of the rest of you catch Simon's question to Ryan after he introduced Simon's girlfriend Terri? "Where's Arthur?" What, is that Ryan's boyfriend?
Kim L.: The only thing I didn't like about her performance was her too tight, too short pants. Not good. She can definitely sing, though (if she can do opera, too, she can play me in the FB movie even though she's the wrong color). Clay: Hooray hooray, his annoying facial and vocal mannerisms seemed somewhat diminished. He still as the problem of giving every song the same emotional reading, but he, too, can definitely sing, smoothly throughout his range. Did it sound to anyone else like Kim L. was singing backup? Trenyce: You know, I was a big fan of hers after her initial semifinal performance, but I don't recognize that great singer in Trenyce's last few performances. It's like, as time has gone on, she's completely forgotten the basics of good vocal production. She doesn't support, she just opens her mouth wider and uses only part of her vocal cords. This is risky because she has much less control, evidenced by strained notes, pitch problems, and cracking. She needs to go to singing rehab. She wasn't the worst tonight though; that dubious distinction goes to . . . Josh: I don't think he's ever sucked quite so hard. Not a single part of the song was solidly in tune, and the whole beginning section sounded boy-bandy in a very bad way (like, worse than O-Town). It was almost as if he was channeling one of his high school performances. Carmen: Oh, her poor skin is looking worse and worse. She sounded better than she has in several weeks; she was right to pick a song with a little more range (of course, anything has more range than "Call Me"). Her last note was dreadful, with bad vowel placement, bad intonation and a scary ovine warble. Ruben: He's ba-aack. Clay could take a few lessons from this guy in how to put appropriate emotion into a song. He was a little weaker at the end of the song, but overall just great. When he opens his arms wide, you just want to run into them (at least that's what my sister said). Bottom three: Trenyce, Josh, Carmen. Of course Carmen should go home (she should have gone home weeks ago), but if last year's voting is any indication the audience pays more attention to performance trend than overall quality. Remember how Tamyra Gray was eliminated last year instead of Nikki McKibbin, because of one sub-par performance? Tamyra's overal quality was exponentially better than Nikki's, but Nikki was more consistent. I'm at a loss to read the audience's mind on this one. If anyone other than one of these three goes home, it will hit me almost as hard as Rickey's untimely departure. I feel kind of bad for Carmen. In spite of her bravado when asked (what's she supposed so say? "I think I should go home"?!??), I think she knows she doesn't belong there, but there's nothing she can do about it. Bless her heart, she's working hard and trying to make the best of it, but I can't help but think she's secretly wishing to make it home in time for senior prom. tm |

I have finally started watching this.
Josh is HORRIBLE. He looks like a cartoon character to me, and I don't think he could win a karaoke contest. Carmen has terrible skin. Yuck. Her skin is one of the best things she has going for her. I missed Trenyce's performance last night. Usually I think she is okay, but I don't think she should win. Kimberly Locke does nothing for me. I always think she is out of tune. Ruben and Clay are always good. I really hate that Simon basically tells Clay he is ugly every time, and I don't understand why he says Clay doesn't fit the AI image when Ruben doesn't either (though I agree that neither of them, actually, none of the final six, look like pop stars to me). I am pulling for Clay, but I would not be upset if Ruben won. |

WOW. They have a Great team!!
I first culled their ideas down to the following submissions (not in any particular order, but numbered here for convenience): 1 vivid 10:32 AM 2 vivid 11:39 AM 3 lace 6:51 PM 4 lace 6:54 PM 5 Reina 8:51 PM (2 submissions at that time, both are very good) 6 lily 9:52 PM Comparing just these six, I think numbers 2, 4, and 5 are the most appealing (for me, anyway). Can't say why for sure; I just liked the touch and feel. I think overall, #5 (Reina's suggestions) are best. The text stands out from/contrasts the background nicely. Other comments: #1 and #2 both looked very good (I don't care about Slave's question about the significance of the arrow, I like the look), but I am not a fan of monochrome shades of gray (although, as a lawyer, I typically look for gray areas :-)). #3 and #4 are great designs/concepts, but not enough contrast between font color and background. With a small logo, it strains the (admittedly old) eyes. #6 I like it (a minor potential contrast issue with the placement of the L and the scales, which I am sure could be adjusted). As an aside, as I type this reply, I keep toggling back and forth between the logo site and this (lawtalkers "add reply") screen. I admite that vivid's 11:52 PM submission is growing on me (I think that deleting the circle around the gavel would improve it markedly). Could you ask them to develop designs for the Ignore button?;) |
Of course, I did not see until now that you already culled/posted recommendations elsewhere on this site. D'Oh!

I'm curious which players the Flyer-haters dislike most. For instance, when I watched this past series I really hated, HATED, to hear the names Molgilny, Tucker, and Svehla. Just pissed me off. On the other hand hearing the names Kaberle or Sundin had no effect on me. Some players just get under your skin for no reason. |

And, I apologize to the Flyers fans for slamming Mister Bean. He won the series for the pumpkin orange bunch. And it looks like my prediction of a Toronto vs. Colorado final is not going to happen. New prediction? New Jersey (cue Puddy from Seinfeld) against Dallas. Blech. Speaking of the Wild game last night, here's a conversation I overheard at the Dew Drop Inn during the game. Cooter: "How did a Chinese fella learn to play hockey?" Big Ed: "Park ain't Chinese. He's of Korean ancestry, I think." Cooter [nodding]: "Well, that explains it then." Big Edna (her name is actually Michelle, btw) [spitting out a mouthful of Labatt's]: "Jesus Christ!" |

And I think everybody hates the Isles because they are the redheaded step child of the NHL. Just kind of pathetic, and not in a money losing way like several Canadian teams, or a since-when-do-they-play-hockey there way, like the Panthers, Hurricanes, Stars, Lightning, Mighty Ducks, Blue Jackets etc., or a french way, like the Nordiques, or even in a Hartford whalers way. Just kind of a sad sack team. But as I said before, I think Nassau Coliseum rocks. And I always liked Mike Bossy - he was one of my lucky hockey cards. |
